What to expect in Morgan Stanley’s first-round?

Hello all,

I got invited to Morgan Stanley’s first round. After passing application review, they mentioned an online assessment before any interviews. Does that mean aptitude tests? And then what’s typically asked in the first-round - behavioral or technical? Any structure or sample questions would help. Thanks in advance!

Hey 👋

The online assessment at Morgan Stanley usually includes basic aptitude tests (numerical, logical, or situational judgment), depending on the division. It’s mainly a screening step, so focus on accuracy and time management.

The first-round interview is typically a mix of behavioral and light technical questions. Expect “Why Morgan Stanley?”, “Why this division?”, and maybe a few technicals like valuation basics, recent market trends, or simple accounting links. It’s about showing your motivation and logical thinking.

If you can, read up on a recent deal or market development and mention it naturally. That always leaves a strong impression.

Hope it helps and good luck!

You can usually expect a mix of technical and behavioral questions in the first round. Technicals are mostly basic - valuation methods, accounting links, maybe a light DCF discussion. They mainly want to see clear logic rather than deep modeling skills.

It’s also common to get a question about recent market trends or deals, just to check if you stay informed and have a general interest in finance. The tone is usually conversational, so focus on staying calm and structured.
