I know that researching the company is an important part of the interview preparation, but it can be hard to know how much is actually necessary. It would be interesting to hear what others usually focus on when preparing and which information has actually been useful during interviews?

Everything - you want to be an expert on the company and its (key) people. CVs, deals, trends, ways of working, the way an office/a firm is structured/goes about their work, etc. Most people I have come across are way too generic on this. The interviewer will be able to tell.
