UBS IBD assessment center breakdown

Hi everyone,

I’ve just been invited to UBS’s assessment center for an investment banking internship in London and I’d love to know what to expect. I understand there will be technical interviews, group exercises, and possibly a case study, but I’m unsure how much of it is quantitatively rigorous versus focused on communication and teamwork. Has anyone gone through this recently? How should I approach the group work portion, especially if I’m not naturally the most outspoken person in the room?

Hi There!

Congratulations on being invited to UBS’s assessment center — that’s already a strong step forward. You can expect the day to be a mix of technical interviews, where your understanding of accounting, valuation, and financial markets will be tested, and group exercises or case studies that assess your problem-solving, communication, and collaboration skills. While the technical portion can be quantitatively rigorous, especially if you're interviewing for investment banking, UBS places just as much emphasis on how you think through a problem and explain your reasoning clearly under pressure.

For the group exercise, the key is not to dominate the conversation but to contribute consistently and constructively. If you're not naturally outspoken, focus on asking thoughtful questions, building on others’ ideas, and helping structure the discussion. Assessment centers are designed to identify team players as much as leaders, so being a calm, clear, and collaborative presence is just as valuable as being the loudest voice. Demonstrating that you can work well with others while maintaining a clear line of reasoning will serve you well throughout the day.

Congrats on getting the AC invite! 🎉

From what I’ve heard from people who went through UBS’s assessment center recently, it usually includes technical interviews, a group exercise, and sometimes a short case or presentation. The technical questions focus on the basics like DCF, comps, and accounting. Some people mentioned getting a brainteaser, but that seems pretty rare.

The group part is more about communication and collaboration than doing tough calculations. UBS seems to care about how you work with others, whether you listen, contribute ideas, and help keep things on track. You do not need to be the loudest person. I know someone who was on the quieter side but helped structure the discussion and ended up getting great feedback.

If you are not naturally outspoken, try to say something early on, even if it is just suggesting how to approach the task. That small moment can help set the tone and show initiative.

Hope it goes really well for you. You are already doing great just by making it to this stage.
