I recently received my first performance review in my new finance job, and it wasn’t as positive as I had hoped. The feedback highlighted a few areas where I’m struggling, and I’m feeling pretty discouraged because I really want to succeed in this role. How can I bounce back from a negative review and turn things around? What’s the best way to approach my manager about setting goals or getting additional support? If anyone has been through something similar (doesn't have to be finance roles specifically), I’d really appreciate your advice on how to improve and move forward.
Recovering from a bad performance review in my first finance job. Any tips?

Hi,
First off, don’t be too hard on yourself – getting tough feedback early on is more common than you think, and it doesn’t mean you can’t turn things around. The fact that you’re motivated to improve already says a lot about your attitude.
One of the best things you can do is take some time to really process the feedback without getting defensive. Try to understand where the gaps are and own up to them. This shows maturity and accountability, which managers respect. Once you’ve reflected on the feedback, set up a follow-up conversation with your manager. Be proactive in that meeting – ask for specific examples, clarify expectations, and see if they have any advice or resources that could help you get on track.
It’s also a good idea to work with your manager to set clear, achievable goals. This helps you stay focused and shows them you’re serious about growing. Don’t wait until the next review cycle to see how you’re doing. Checking in regularly shows initiative and keeps you on track, plus it gives you a chance to make adjustments if needed.
If the feedback highlighted any skill gaps, look for ways to improve, whether that’s through online courses, finding a mentor, or even asking colleagues for help. This shows you’re willing to put in the effort to get better. And most importantly, keep a positive mindset and stay persistent. It’s easy to feel discouraged, but remember that growth often comes from setbacks.
A lot of people have bounced back from a rough review and ended up doing great things. Use this as a learning opportunity and a chance to show resilience. You’ve got this! And if you would like to have a quick chat about it, feel free to reach out.
Best,
Simon
