I have a big four audit apprenticeship from which I will get an AAT qualification and ACA. Is it possible for me to break into strategy/management consulting after the 5 year apprenticeship programme, and if so how would I go about doing so?

Hi There!

Yes, it’s possible to transition from a Big Four audit apprenticeship into strategy or management consulting, though it requires proactive planning. Focus on developing transferable skills such as financial analysis, problem-solving, and client communication during your apprenticeship. Gain exposure to advisory or consulting-related projects within the firm if possible, and leverage your ACA qualification to highlight your technical expertise.

Networking is key: connect with consultants, attend events, and seek informational interviews to understand the consulting landscape. When ready to apply, tailor your CV and case interview prep to emphasize analytical rigor, project experience, and business insight rather than purely accounting skills.

Yes, it’s definitely possible! Your ACA and audit experience give you a strong foundation. To make the switch, focus on networking (especially within your firm if they have a consulting arm), building relevant skills (like data analysis or financial modeling), and practicing case interviews. Highlight your transferable skills, like problem-solving and working with clients, and you’ll be in a good position.

Yes, it’s possible to move into strategy or management consulting after your Big Four apprenticeship with AAT and ACA.

To do that:

  • Build strong problem-solving, communication, and project skills during your apprenticeship.
  • Seek opportunities to work on advisory or consulting-type projects within your firm.
  • Network actively with consultants and attend consulting events or webinars.
  • Consider doing an MBA or relevant courses to boost your consulting credentials.
  • Tailor your CV to highlight transferable skills like analysis, teamwork, and client work.
  • Apply to entry or associate-level consulting roles, sometimes even with a focus on financial consulting.

The key is showing you understand the consulting mindset and can solve complex business problems, not just audit or accounting.
