How to prepare for technical IB interviews if I haven’t studied finance

I didn’t major in finance, and I’m trying to teach myself valuation, accounting, and financial modeling for interviews. What’s the best way to get up to speed quickly?

Hi,
Preparing for technical investment banking interviews without a finance background can be challenging, but it’s definitely achievable with a structured approach. Start by mastering the basics of finance and accounting, which are the foundation for most technical questions. Focus on understanding financial statements, valuation methods like DCF, Comparable Company Analysis, and LBO models, and the key concepts behind corporate finance such as WACC and capital structure. You can find excellent resources through books like Investment Banking by Rosenbaum and Pearl, online courses from platforms like Wall Street Prep or Breaking Into Wall Street, and free YouTube tutorials. Once you understand the theory, practice is key—work through case studies, model-building exercises, and technical questions to get comfortable applying these concepts. Excel skills are also vital, as they’re essential for financial modeling, so prioritize learning relevant shortcuts and functions. Additionally, understanding the deal process and staying updated on industry news will give you the practical context needed for interviews. Don’t forget to network with professionals in the field, seek out mock interviews, and practice under pressure. By staying consistent and dedicated, you’ll quickly bridge the gap and be well-prepared for your IB interviews.

Wish you the best!

Hey there,

You don’t need a finance degree to succeed in IB interviews, but you do need to master the core technicals in accounting, valuation, and financial modeling.

To get up to speed quickly, focus on structured resources. PrepLounge offers some, but BIWS, WSO, or Rosenbaum & Pearl are also worth taking a look at. Supplement with YouTube tutorials and, most importantly, hands-on practice (actually building models is key). Mock interviews will also help reinforce concepts and improve your confidence.

If you need any support, please don't hesitate to get in touch.

Hi, ff you haven't studied finance, preparing for technical IB interviews requires intense self-study focusing on core concepts. Start with accounting fundamentals: understand the three financial statements (Income Statement, Balance Sheet, Cash Flow Statement) and how they link. Then, move to valuation methodologies: master Discounted Cash Flow (DCF) analysis, comparable company analysis (CCA), and precedent transaction analysis (PTA), understanding their mechanics, pros, and cons. Utilize online resources like Wall Street Prep, Breaking Into Wall Street, and Investopedia, and practice common interview questions rigorously.
