How do referrals usually work at Morgan Stanley?

Hi all,

I’ve been reaching out to people at Morgan Stanley to network (mostly for coffee chats). After each chat, I usually ask if they recommend anyone else I should talk to, and that’s worked well so far. I’ve spoken with a few analysts and associates already, and I have a VP coffee chat coming up in the office I’m targeting.

Just wondering: do these chats get tracked internally somehow? Or do I need to directly ask someone for a formal referral if I want to be flagged in the system?

While coffee chats may not be formally tracked, they’re valuable for building relationships. If you’re interested in a referral, it’s best to directly ask your contacts (ideally after establishing rapport) or apply through the official portal and mention your connections. The VP chat could be a great opportunity to express your interest and ask about next steps.
