How advanced should accounting prep really be?

Hello everyone,

For current analyst recruiting, how deep are candidates expected to go on accounting concepts? I feel like some interview guides massively underestimate this part.

I am grateful for any insights.

Agreed with you re interview guides. Almost all of them underestimate the level of difficulty or rather the level of "fluency" required for actual real-life interviews. You are not interviewing for Account Expert roles, so having basic/intermediate knowledge in accounting will suffice. However, super important to be able to "connect the dots" and being able to go deep on a specific topic and apply it to relevant real-life scenarios. Mastery/Fluency in the concepts is more important than being superficial/broad on topics but not really mastering any. BIWS guides (the advanced ones) are recommended. 400Qs too basic and miss the point, Rosenbaum/Pearl is clean and on-point but not "hard" enough, however, technically covers everything you need to know.
