Hi, I'm currently finishing my bachelor's in international economics and management at Bocconi University. I'm applying for the Mim at ESADE, the Mim at IE, and the Master in strategic management at RSM. If I got accepted in all these three programs, which would be the best choice for breaking into consulting (MBB or otherwise) in Europe?

Hey there,

I went to ESADE myself (MBA) and it's a great school - same as IE. With undergrad at Bocconi and a postgrad from either one of those Spanish schools, you will be fine (can't speak to the other school).

At ESADE, MBB folks were swarming around campus for recruiting from all programs. Some of the MiM people sometimes joined our MBA events for case cracking sessions, MBB visits etc., which career service supports. There's also a long list of MBB alumni from the school, which is a great network to tap into. Bottom line, you'd be doing well with either of those 2 options if MBB is your goal.

However, you as a candidate still have to be more interesting and capable than the rest of your cohort! Otherwise you won't be considered. Hence, don't rely on reputation alone!

I was the only MBA from my cohort of 180 people who was hired by McKinsey (and many tried…) so I know something about that. Let me know if you'd like to learn more!

Hope this helps a bit!

McKinsey | Awarded professor at Master in Management @ IE | MBA at MIT |+180 students coached | Integrated FIT Guide aut

Hello!

I have seen multiple questions lately in the Q&A regarding doing masters, which one to choose, MBA vs. MiM, which schools to choose (both in US and Europe).

I joined McK after finishing my master in Architecture (totally not related field of study, and still), and I am doing an MBA in MIT atm. Furthermore, I have been a professor in the Master in Management from Instituto de Empresa, in Madrid (MiM in IE Business School). Happy to talk about this, and also happy to guide you with MBA applications, something that I have been doing lately.

Feel free to PM! Cheers,

Clara

Hi there,

First of all, be careful here. You need to be happy with your decision even if you don't get MBB. Think first about what country you'd like to be in, what school you'll learn best from, what student/school culture you'll fit in best with.

That said, ESADE and IE will likely give you higher chances. Ultimately, this is easy to google - look at the rankings…the higher generally the better!

Just a quick answer, and thanks for reaching out to us.

a) Generally MBB put so much emphasis on reputation, from that standpoint always choose the strongest school. However there are so many other factors that should affect your school choice, too.

b) Since you have a very specific goal, I would advice you ask each program directly to let you know how many made it to MBB and then tier 2 in each year group over the past years and what specifically they do to support students in finding their job. This really helps because you will get a great impression of your likelihood to make it through. You can always increase your chances with coaching.

c) And irrespectively of this, all these schools would be good enough to be considered by MBB if you make it to the top 10% of your class.

Hi there,

You can easily check this on LinkedIn. You can do so by:

  1. Identifying on LinkedIn the number of alumni of a university in MBB in your desired location and
  2. Adjusting for the cohort size

This will give you a data-driven guideline instead of having to trust arbitrary rankings or the marketing pitch of the school – in my option the best way to make a decision.

Best,

Francesco
