I graduated December 2020 and was offered an entry level consulting postion at a non MBB or Big4 in California. When I spoke with the hiring manager, then, they mentioned my start date will be between May-July 2021. However, I had another meeting recently and now they're saying it's more likely to be between July-November 2021.

I'm a little confused and frustrated not knowing what to do. I can't get an internship because I've graduated an don't want to interfere if I'm under a contract and travelling isn't an option due to the pandemic.

1. Is it normal to have a start date pushed back?

2. Should I consider applying to other companies?

3. What can I do in the meantime to stay busy and make money?

Any guidance and support is greatly appreciated!

Unfortunately, these things happened a lot during COVID. I would indeed start searching for alternatives! If you apply to other firms right now, you might be getting a start by summer. And since they pushed the start date, I wouldn't worry about letting them down.

Hi there,

Congratulations but also condolences - not an easy position to be in.

1. I wouldn't say "normal" but certainly more common during covid. That said, I don't love the signs here. There is some risk here. Not to panic you, but there's a chance they're not doing well and may push the dates again or even withdraw the offer...you need a contingency plan just in case.

2. 100%. I would start searching now. There is literally no downside risk here. If you get an offer that you like equally (or more) and that let's you start earlier, then break your contract at this current place....you have a more than valid/reasonable defense for doing this! Please don't worry about them here, they're not honoring their promises!

3. Plenty :). Start a startup, teach, get an internship, drive uber/lift, etc. etc. There has never been a period where more people were starting business in the US. Find something you can make/provide and sell it online!

Hi there,

1. It was not much the case in the past. But since COVID, consulting companies are doing so due to less predictable demand. Was quite common last year also for top consulting companies

2 and 3. You can definitely apply to other positions in the meantime. They can provide you income sources and a backup in case of any issue with your current offer

Best,

Francesco

Hi there,

Congrats on the offer but sorry for the situation you are in!

I'd agree with Ian - don't panic, but looking around won't hurt! You can end up finding some better options!

In any case, don't let the situation let you down and use this time wisely: network, study, create a start-up, make some new experiences, boost up your CV, etc., etc..

Feel free to reach out for any further advice!

Good luck!

GB

Hey, agree with other coaches. This sounds a bit risky to me, so look for other options in parallel.
