Hello experts,

I am aware there is no typical day in consulting, however I would like to get a feeling of what an Associate at Mckinsey need to achieve daily in a real project setup.

Please provied 3 distinct examples/scenarios of daily work product(s) an Associate is expected to deliver.

Input from experts with previous roles as Associates and Engagement Managers at Mckinsey is highly appreciated.

Thanks, T.S.

Hi there,

Sounds like you could benefit from getting on the phone and talking to some people in consulting! (I.e. networking).

3 distinct examples/scenarios:

  1. Design and conduct interviews (e.g. client interviews)
  2. Create powerpoint slides (outline w/ framework, storylining etc. or finalized slides for SteerCos etc.)
  3. Working in excel/tableau/alteryx to generate charts/insights

Hi there,

you'll spend a lot of time…

  • Doing / mocking up slides
  • Conducting / coordinating research - primary & secondary
  • Building excel or advanced analytics models & tools to generat insight
  • Interacting with clients / internal stakeholders to get input on / align on / present to any of the above

Hope this helps.

Regards, Andi

Hi,

The typical tasks have already been mentioned by other coaches. If you are going to start work as an Associate (vs a Business Analyst), then one key nuance you need to be aware of is also the difference in expectations w.r.t to these daily tasks vs a more junior role.

Typically, Associates (or post-MBA roles) are expected to demonstrate a significantly higher level of end-to-end ownership and eventually perform ‘at next level’ - which requires you to already start demonstrating traits of a manager.

All the best!

Hi there,

This is a great question!

I actually wrote an article exactly about this from the perspective of a McKinsey consultant. You can read it here:

Also, you can read this guide on what it takes to be a distinctive consultant in your first year:

In terms of actual examples of engagements or day-in-the-life, they are lots of fun videos of this on youtube (more engaging than what we could write here), plus you can also ask ChatGPT to give you examples of engagements and the role that Associates / EMs would play there.

Best of luck!
Cristian
