Hola, guys!

I'm about to have a written case with Bain Moscow office. Does anyone has experience with it except their posts in social media? Not so many companies use it, so it's quite hard to prepare. It will be great ot get a sample case and some tips on it. Thank you in advance and good luck with applications!

    Engaging the interviewer. How?

Anonymous gave the best answer on Jul 20, 2016

Hello everyone!

My question is simple: how should one engage the interviewer? I understand that you should possess genuine interest in the problem and perceive an interview as if you are talking to your friend and you are trying to solve their problem together with them. However, this doesn't really help me practically... How can I ensure that the interviewer is having fun and we are solving a problem together?

Cheers!

Good question. It's actually really hard to give general advice on. Again, a bit like going on a date - how can I make sure he/she likes me? All social rules and norms apply -- what kind of candidate would you like if ... (read entire answer)

    Not improving at case interviews?

approaching a case Case Case Interview case interview preparation Case Prep Case training flatline McKinsey McKinsey Final Round Practice cases prep preparation
Most recent answer on Nov 17, 2020

I'm preparing for case interviews and I feel like I'm not improving. Last year I interviewed for MBB, and I bombed all my first round interviews. Before those interviews, I did 30+ live practice cases on Prep Lounge. I used Victor Cheng's video tutorials and LOMS. And I skimmed through Case In Point. And I still sucked in the real interviews. I just feel really slow during the cases, it takes me a long time to think of questions to ask, and I don't feel like I reach the insight needed to get the answer.

This time around, I've skimmed again through Case In Point, and developed my own framework. I've read through the practice cases in CiP and I feel like in a real case there would be no way I could digest so much info at once. And I still feel like I really suck at cases and I'm not improving.

I guess I am looking for advice? On how to actually improve? I feel like nothing is helping, even when I did live cases last year on PrepLounge I didn't feel like I was improving.

Thank you in advance!!

    Quant skills

Case Calculations Case Interview Interview Math problem McKinsey prep preparation profitability analysis Quantitative skills
Most recent answer on Aug 22, 2020

Hi guys,

I have my first round McKinsey case interviews (Associate position) coming up at the end of the year. Postponed due to personal reasons -HR asked me to phone in again and book a suitable time later in the year and I am therefore using the time to practise as much as I can.

My problem is I really am not doing well with the quant calculations in terms of knowing the approach to use to solve the case (not framework - mathematical approach). When I look at the answers I ask myself why certain numbers were multiplied/divided as it would never have otherwise occured to me to perform the calculation in that particular method. Can ANYONE please please tell me if this problem is normal and how to go about it. I am beginning to get really discouraged. Ironically I got an A in Math in school (haha) but I cant seem to wrap my head around why some calculations were carried out using the math approach used in the cases(s).

Hi Moji, it seems your issue is not the math computation, but rather how to structure the math part once you receive a question (that is, the logic behind that you should apply). This means you should not work on your ... (read entire answer)

Dear all,

I am wondering whether it is appropriate/possible to apply to the offices in other countries of the company (MBB and 2nd tier) that rejected you?

Let's imagine that we are talking about an insignificant amount of time in between applications (3-6 months) and that the rejection feedback was only concerning the case performance. If case is the only problem then it should be doable to improve within half a year. Do companies keep track of the profiles + rejection reasons as a worldwide database?

Thanks!

Hi everyone,

I come from a legal background and have started looking into the interview processes as I intend to make a career change. It's a bit overwhelming how different the interview process is for consulting is vis-a-vis a legal position. If anyone has been through this route (or switching in from a completely different industry into consulting), I'd be grateful for some pointers on how to make this process efficient.

I know that a serious weakness of mine is with math so working on that... and also having to familiarise myself with the various business concepts/basic frameworks. Is it worth forcusing on this first before diving into cases or doing both in tandem?

Thank you!

Prep work for a role in Management Consultancy

Most recent answer on Jul 06, 2019

Hi

I am an Energy Consultant with experience running my own startup. I am looking to transition into MC after MBA at a top-tier B-School. Could someone answer the following queries:

1. Having worked for a large corporate, I am of the opinion that working for a boutique consultancy would be a better training ground as you get to perform greater variety of tasks. I am not concerned with having fortune 500 clients under my CV but do see the benefits of having MBB brand. Thus, can someone share their experience or opinion of starting work with boutique MC rather than MBB/tier 2 (which I could always go to after some experience)?

2. I understand that MBB hires business graduates with business analysis and quant skills. Since I do not have this background yet, are there any certifications or volunteer work I can do to gain analysis skills that are required by associates. For instance FVMA, ECBA..

3. What prep work can I do to give myself the best chance to succeed in this industry? Currently, I am doing brain teasers, quant aptitude questions, learning about case studies and regularly reading HBR, WSJ, FT, Economist etc.

Thanks

Recent activity on Sep 12, 2018

It has occured to me that unless sites like Victor Cheng's caseinterview.com and preplounge existed we all (undergraduate candidates) would be woefully unprepared. The company websites mention "practising a few cases" and "thinking about your motivation" a week or so before the interview - yet surely they must know that most candidates spend at least +20h on live practice cases alone. Likewise, it is only from websites like these that I would know that I need to understand how to do DCF, NPV etc in a case. Yet the firms claim that they hire from any discipline (as if knowing what DCF is innate knowledge). Why do firms underplay the extent of business knowledge that is needed?

A number of comments here: 1) Firms underplay it because they don't want candidates that will be good at interviews as a result of countless hours of practice - they want candidates that demonstrate the key skills/qua ... (read entire answer)
