Moving to Consulting from PE

    dubai London MBB SE Asia
Most recent answer on Feb 21, 2021

Hi Preplounge Community,

I am currently 6 years into my job in a Private Equity fund under one of the top US banks and I am expecting a promotion to VP soon. I picked PE over consulting out of my Masters due to the location (wanted to stay in London) and also because it had aspects of both finance and strategy to it. However, as I moved up the ranks, I expected the human interaction aspect to go up and the finance aspect to decrease. That hasn't happened at my fund yet and seems to be the case across most London based mega funds where I have interviewed earlier. This has prompted me to explore consulting as a career as I increasingly see myself more interested to analyse business fundamentals and maintain relationships instead of do fundraising/analyse financials.

1. Is it possible for me to move to Dubai/SE Asia/India in a consulting role? I do not have an MBA, but have a Masters in Mgmt. degree

2. What position could I be targetting?

3. Is it an easy move? Or should I let go of this move altogether? Do I need to go via recruitment agencies or network a lot?

Thanks!

Hi there, Let me first just say you can absolutely move into consulting from PE. You'll likely need to come in as a specialist, likely at the Project Lead role, and you'll need to network to improve your chances. 1) ... (read entire answer)

Most recent answer on May 31, 2020

Hi, does anyone have any experience with interviewing with McKinsey in Australia? I would appreciate any tips you may have, or if you could share your experiences with the first and second rounds.

Thanks.

Hi, It has no difference with the final round McKinsey interviews in any other country. In the final round, I would expect a bit more structured and demanding approach to the fit part. The partners in the last round ... (read entire answer)

    McKinsey or BCG for full-time?

Asia BCG consultants consulting McKinsey meritocracy offer office culture SE Asia Which firm?
Most recent answer on Oct 31, 2019

Dear Community,

Please, could some current and/or ex-consultants could weigh in objectively on the choice between the Boston Consulting Group (BCG) and McKinsey & Company?

I was recently fortunate enough to land offers from both these companies, and wanted to get expert opinions to help make the choice.

The brand name (for example, the conventional acceptance that McKinsey is superior to BCG) is irrelevant to me. Rather, I care more about these things:

office comeraderie

ease of upward mobility and an adherence to meritocracy

breadth of case studies/client projects across different industries

international exposure

non-financial perks

exit opportunities

These are both positions in SE Asia.

Many thanks in advance for the usual kindness and thoughtfulness that characterise this forum. :-)

Hi Anonymous, first of all, congratulations for getting the two offers, that’s a great achievement! Both are great choices and you cannot really go wrong with any. The answers to your questions would depend on the c ... (read entire answer)

Southeast Asian offices as a European

Application BestOffices office preferences SE Asia
Recent activity on Sep 20, 2018
    Anonymous A asked on Sep 20, 2018

Hi everyone. I'm a European, currently applying to consulting firms - Tier 1 and Tier 2. I have studied and travelled through SE Asia extensively, know the market and trends, and I would like to know whether it would be possible for me to apply in the region, and if so, at which offices.

I have been told that the Singapore offices only recruit Singaporeans as the country has an incredible rate of people in higher education and that visas are hard to obtain; I know that the Hong Kong offices prefer fluency in Mandarin due to daily interactions with Chinese clients. Does anyone know of any "international" Southeast Asian office - i.e where vernacular language wouldn't be required, similar to Dubai? I dabble in three Asian languages but I'm not anywhere near fluent.

Would appreciate any insights on Southeast Asian/East Asian offices as I feel most questions I've seen so far focus on Europe and the Middle-East.

Thanks!
