After signing the Full-time offer

2nd tier consulting Job offer time to sign the offer
Most recent answer on Dec 31, 2020

dear community,

I have recently signed my offer with a top tier 2 consulting firm in the US for the entrey-level consultant position starting next year Sept. Yet, I havn't heard back from them for past two weeks upon signing. What is the usual circumstance for the period after offer is signed (would be great if you may share your experience!)? Is there an automatic start of the background check without me knowing or does that happen right before job starts?

Thank you!

Yes, there is typically a background check that they will need to do. You'll probably have to sgn a consent form for the service provider to authoize them to reach out to past employers. Since you have 10 months, don' ... (read entire answer)

    2nd tier PowerPoint presentation
Most recent answer on Dec 30, 2020

Hi everyone! I am going to start working for a Tier 2 consulting company in January and have been looking into preparation materials. I would be really grateful for any tips on using Powerpoint like slide design etc. I am currently looking at slides online to see what I can learn from them. Thank you in advance!

Power Point First, read "Say it with charts" and "Pyramid Principle". As a next step Google for MBB presentations on SlideShare and try to replicate them in PPT. Finally, take MBA type cases (HBS or any other) a ... (read entire answer)

Putting work experience (with an international assignment) less than 6 months on CV? Good or bad?

2nd tier Application application process CV CV screening experience experience abroad MBB
Most recent answer on Nov 18, 2020

From the tips that I have read are work experiences with an international dimension well appreciated by consulting firms (MBB as well as Tier 2 firms). However, in my case, the specific role (in engineering) was for less than 6 months and I took the decision to quit. I can explain the reason for quitting it. It has nothing to do with the travelling whatsoever and no drama happened. Thus, my question: is it better to leave it out and not mention it on my CV (since I only stayed for a short period) to pass the screening stage or do you think it is better to mention it in order to increase the odds of passing the screening stage .The reasoning behind the latter: it is the only point on my CV that shows that I have worked on an international assignment and that I have no issues with travelling, etc.

Hi, It would be useful if we had more context, but what I can advise is that you should keep this in your CV as international work experience is valuable. You can position this as an internship or contactor/freelancer ... (read entire answer)

Do MBBs/management consulting firms have 'Busy/Low' seasons?

Hi, I am curious, do management consulting fimrs have a 'busy' and 'low' season'? I know for the Big4 firms their busy season is now beginning ahead of tax season in certain countries, but I was curious about management consultancies. In my country we can apply for positions year-round so I'm not so much asking about hiring policies as just general workload and number of projects starting up and being staffed.

Absolutely! Demand is often in line with the vacation/holiday preferences in the country (e.g. summer/Christmas = slow in Western Europe). There are even some offices in Scandinavia that close for a whole month during t ... (read entire answer)

Hi fellow future consultants,

Just wondering are there any firms that tend to have easier case interviews? I know MBB and some other can have really difficult ones, but what firms are generally nicer?

Thanks!

Networking tips for an experienced hire in Toronto

2nd tier ATKearney coffee MBB networking oliverwyman
Recent activity on Feb 08, 2019

Hi

I am an ex-consultant and worked with KPMG in India in their Strategy and Operations team for about 3 years. I did work in the areas of Business Transformation, Investment Appraisal, and Profit Improvement. I also worked in their Toronto office for a year. Recently, the management started focusing more on advisory work than strategy consulting. I love consulting but the challenge I am facing is that I hardly know people in Toronto in the consulting sector like in MBB or tier 2 firms.

I did try to find out networking events where I can meet people from MBB/Tier 2 firms, but either there are a million people targetting employees from the firm or I hardly come across anyone considering they are busy with work. I also tried to reach them on LinkedIn, but no luck.

What would be your advice for networking with MBB/Tier 2 firms in Toronto?

Thanks

Hi, I would start with understanding where your experience fits best in consulting. If we take the BIG3 companies as an example, there may be multiple options: You have some general experience that is relevant for ... (read entire answer)

Differences between MBB and Tier2 interviews

    2nd tier MBB
Recent activity on Feb 05, 2019

Hi All,

i would appreciate a complete review about the differences in interviewing at MBB rather than Tier2. I suppose level is a bit lower at Tier2, but in what terms (competition, cases, possibility of doing "errors" during interviews, overall interview level, etc.)??

thank you a lot.

In my experience, the main difference will be the level of expectations: - Both MBB & TIer2 will have a case + fit portions. Yes, some MBB and some Tier2 will also add specific sections, but this is the general st ... (read entire answer)

    Salary and Benefits in Germany

2-tier 2nd tier DACH germany inhouse MBB salary
Recent activity on Dec 14, 2018

Hello Together,

I am German and look to start in management consulting. I can find many links and lists about salaries and benefits and bonuses in the UK and USA, but not many for Germany. I use Glassdoor but even for entry level positions, which is what I am interested about, there is a big range in base salary and bonuses, usually 20-30,000€ difference in the same firm and location for the same position. I read here there is no negotiation for entry positions and all are equal, so I wonder how this is possible? Is it because education levels start at different amounts?

I also wonder what kind of benefits and bonuses consultants in Germany have. I read here in another thread there is no sign-on bonus. What about relocation bonus? Is salary higher in expensive cities such as München and Hamburg or the same in every city?

I am interested to know for MBB and 2 tier and lower and inhouse too (Like Siemens or DHL). I know every firm and tier is different but want to ask to get a better understanding.

Hi Anonymous, speaking for MBB: Conditions are fixed and identical across all cities in Germany (non-negotiable for fresh university graduates) You get a lump-sum relocation allowance (you could call this reloca ... (read entire answer)

From software engineer/architect into management consulting

2nd tier Accenture Application BCG McKinsey and Bain management consulting MBB strategy consulting
Recent activity on Dec 03, 2018

Hi All,

I have a science background (PhD in physics) and currently work as a software engineer/architect in IT consulting. I recently did MBA and want to change to strategy/management consulting. Last few years I am researching the consulting firms and my impression is that job description from 2nd tier firms require more specialised applicants (project management, sales, finances, energy, certain industry, etc.) while MBB is more general and does not really care about specialisation. Did I get it right or this is only true for the beginers and for those more experience things are different

Considering that I do not have any specialised business experience what would be a better strategy for me to move to management consulting?

Thanks

This is directionally right, yes: MBB wants good people, and will train them as needed. Best way to get admissions is to get an interview and crack the case. With a PhD + MBA, you have a solid background. Hopefully one ... (read entire answer)

How is the work/life balance/working hours in Middle East?

Recent activity on Nov 27, 2018

Hi,

I am thinking of applying for an internship in Middle East as an expat at a 2nd Tier consulting firm (in this case Oliver Wyman). Their consultants are all based in Dubai, but a lot of the projects are in Saudi Arabia.

From some people I have heard that working in Middle East is even harder than in Western Europe and Germany (all nighters are pretty common, work on weekends etc.).

Can you confirm this?

Based on friends and colleagues in the middle east, It is definitely known as a tough Geography to work in, in terms of hours. This is due to a couple reasons: A lot of growth/strategy cases that are very demanding ... (read entire answer)

    MBB/2nd Tier/Boutique/In-house?

2nd tier application process boutique CV events germany interview process MBB
Recent activity on Oct 04, 2018

Hi! I'll soon begin applying to consulting firms (currently networking and learning more). I've been doing a lot of research and I know the factual differences between MBB/2nd Tier/Boutique/In-house firms (I'm applying in Germany-my German skills are good, but not yet client-ready/polished), however I'd like to ask if anyone had any thoughts on the benefits of working for a boutique or in-house consultancy, as those are the two I'm least familiar with.

I am aiming for MBB but I don't plan to put all my eggs in one basket so I'd like to look at other options -- I would also like to possibly get in some interview practice at the firms I'm less interested in before interviewing with MBB, so of course it would be benefical to know some of the positives of working in these other environments.

I'm only looking into firms/boutiques/in-house which have an international presence, even if it's a small one. Thanks to anyone who has any thoughts on this topic :)
