McKinsey Solve Game Technical Difficulties

Hi There,

I recently was invited for the McKinsey Solve Game and ran into technical difficulties that was confirmed by technical support. Technical support confirmed that there would be not negative effects on my application as the issue had nothing to do with me (I made a PDF of all our conversations during the Game and screenshots of the errors). That was on April 3rd. The time window for the game was March 28ish to April 11th.

On April 7th I had called the local McKinsey office but they refused to put me through to their recruiters or HR. Instead I wrote their receptionist an email as they claimed they would forward it to their HR team if “they saw it appropriate”.

On April 12th I got an email that my application was rejected. I assumed this was an automated response and contacted a talent coordinator through the website.

After contacting HR, they mentioned that a recruiter had turned down the application because they had “received scores” from the SOLVE Game. I am genuinely  confused as to what scores they received?

The position is in the Middle East but the recruiting office was in Poland. I made the international call to the direct line of this person and received no response.

I had written emails to explain the situation but still have not received any update or intimation.

What do I do?

Any help would be appreciated.

Hi there,

Sorry to hear about the situation, I can imagine how frustrating this is. In terms of your question:

Q: I had written emails to explain the situation but still have not received any update or intimation. What do I do?

I would try to call HR of the office the position was referring to. If you cannot speak with the person that turned down the application, you can try to talk with someone else in that department to explain what happened, hopefully they will be able to help.

Good luck!

Francesco

Hi there,

Oh boy, I'm SO sorry to hear about this. This is well and truly frustrating - nothing is worse than getting caught up in bureacracy like this and not being able to even reach anyone.

Normally, I “flip” things and talk about what you could have done differently. However, you've done everything right to this point (I see in your comment to Sofia you have even kept track of all this…excellent work…always get things in writing).

I think your only course of action is to keep calling. You have to get someone on the line instead of emails (it's just so hard to get HR/recruiter responses via email).

Additionally, do you know anyone at the firm? Any contact? Any referrer?

Really wishing you luck here. If it's any consolation, hiring is quite subdued at the moment so it's unlikely youre “missing out” here…as in it's unlikely you would have been interviewed regardless (right now)…but I know that probably doesn't help much.

Fingers crossed for you!

Hi there,

First of all, I am sorry to hear about your negative experience with McKinsey!

I think this is an interesting question that may be relevant for many people. I would be happy to share my thoughts on it:

  • First of all, since you have done everything correctly, I would highly advise you to keep trying to get in touch with the recruiter to explain the situation.
  • However, in case you are either unable to get in touch with the recruiter or the recruiter insists on their decision, I would advise you not to dwell on it and apply to other strategy consulting companies.

If you would like a more detailed discussion on how to address your specific situation, please don't hesitate to contact me directly.

Best,

Hagen

Hi there,

Sorry to hear about this. It sounds like you really did everything that you could.

My suggestion would be to move on at this point. Things can always go wrong in life and many times they can be totally unfair.

I would recommend that you now keep on applying to other firms. Have a look at the following guide on how to best do it:

Hello,

I'm sorry to hear about your experience, this sounds extremely frustrating! I think your best bet would be to get in touch with someone asap - try the recruiting office in Poland, and also try HR at the ME office you are applying to. If you can't reach the specific person you mentioned in Poland, try someone else at that office (if applicable). I recommend trying a call, and follow-up via email if you can't get through to them after a few attempts, and explain your situation.

Also, do you have a confirmation from technical support that there were technical issues on your test in writing? If not, I would recommend reaching out to them too to get a confirmation, just to cover your bases.

Bottom line is, I would try very hard to (politely!) get in touch with someone at the firm about your situation. Best of luck!

Hi Sofia, Thanks for your reply. Yes I have made a PDF with all the conversations between technical support and myself along with all the error messages the game gave me. I had done this just to cover myself and ensure I would get a fair chance in the recruitment process. I am just in this cycle of emailing and waiting each time just to be met by someone who again knows nothing about the situation and just tells me that I have been rejected. Thank you once again.

I'm sorry, that's really frustrating. I'd recommend trying to reach out by phone too if possible, you might get a quicker response that way.
