Hello everyone,

I'm new to the consulting industry, and I've been advised by a friend to explore opportunities at McKinsey and PwC Consulting. I'm curious about how these two companies compare in terms of various aspects such as prestige, work culture, the people who work there, and any other relevant factors. Can anyone provide insights or share their thoughts on this?

Thank you in advance for your help!

Hi there,

Welcome to the journey!

Now, please buckle in…

You need to do a lot of research and thinking about this industry and if it's RIGHT FOR YOU.

You're casually walking into a very very serious and intense industry - you don't know what you don't know yet.

Please don't embark on this because a friend told you to. Network with a ton of people, watch youtube videos and read articles online. Dive deep into what this role/job actually entails.

If you understand that you will work 70+ hour weeksand that the interview prep alone takes 2-3 months of intense study, then great! Just make sure you're ready for the challenge :)

To answer your question, McKinsey is viewed as the #1. PwC is somewhere in top 10.

Hi there,

There is a big difference between the two.

While both engage in management consulting, McKinsey is among the top-3 (MBB), which comes with significantly

  • higher prestige
  • higher impact in client work (larger clients, more impactful projects)
  • higher remuneration (especially as you progress up the ranks)
  • better exit opportunities
  • better support systems for consultants

There are, of course, downsides as well. McKinsey has

  • a worse work-life balance (client expectations, leadership expectations, travel logistics, work hours)
  • more stringent, albeit not crazy, up-or-out policy

For your research, you should look into all MBBs and Tier-2 firms when applying for consulting, not just 2 at the opposite end of the spectrum. A few years ago, PwC bought Strategy&, another consulting firm that ranks in the tier-2 segment. You could also look further into this company.

All the best,

Florian

#1 rated MBB & McKinsey Coach

I see you received a few great answers below.

One tip though - make this question a conversation starter for networking coffee chats.

So practically approach consultants currently working at the two firms and ask them for their perspective and their thoughts on it. Based on how the conversation goes, you might even get a referral from it.

Here's how to lead these conversations:

Best,

Cristian

30% off in April 2024 | Bain | EY-Parthenon | Roland Berger | Market Sizing | DARDEN MBA

McKinsey, much higher prestige, better training, more analytically challenging projects, faster career progression, better pay, better brand, better exit opportunities, but more demanding (in terms of performance, rigour / tolerance to errors, and hours). PwC more likely to do process improvement or implementation work.
