MBB to VCA

Hi

I am a Principal/ AP at an MBB and considering a Senior Director Role at Visa Consulting and Analytics.

Having spent many years in consulting and joining VCA at a senior level how do the two roles compare? I focus on similar industries at BCG (i.e. payments)

In the medium term (5 years) would the opportunities be similar?

Hi,

VCA Senior Director:

  • Focused on payments clients within Visa’s ecosystem
  • Stronger work-life balance, more operational execution
  • Limited industry variety but deeper exposure in one vertical

MBB Principal/AP:

  • Broader industry exposure and strategic scope
  • Demanding hours but faster path to Partner or high-level exits
  • Stronger platform for diverse long-term opportunities (PE, startups, C-suite)

In 5 years:

  • VCA → likely leadership roles in fintech/payments
  • MBB → broader exit options, but higher pressure

Go with VCA if you want depth, stability, and are committed to payments. Stick with MBB if you value variety, optionality, and broader long-term positioning.

Best of luck!

How will this answer change considering its AP to SD at VCA? SD is already a leadership role at Visa. Will the ability to grow be muted compared to MBB?

Can you please elaborate on your first question? Growth depends on your future career goals - if you want to keep all doors open, better stay with MBB. If you want to make a career in a niche area, I think making a switch to a botique can even help.

Hey there 😊

It’s fantastic that you’re considering such an exciting move! Transitioning from an MBB to Visa Consulting and Analytics (VCA) at a senior level can certainly be a big step, so let's break down the differences and opportunities.

Role Comparison (MBB vs VCA)

At MBB, you're used to working on high-level strategic issues for clients across multiple industries, often with a focus on advising the C-suite and leading major projects. You likely deal with complex, cross-industry challenges and provide broad strategic insights.

In VCA, the focus is narrower, but the impact can be quite deep. You’ll be working in the payments industry, but with a more operational and executional focus. The work is more data-driven, especially with Visa’s massive data sets, and you will be heavily involved in analytics, product innovation, and helping Visa's partners use payments data to improve operations.

Medium-Term Opportunities (5 Years)

  • MBB: At this level, you’ll likely continue growing your consulting career, with potential pathways to partner or leadership positions in a variety of industries. Consulting offers the flexibility to move across sectors, though it can sometimes feel like the project-based lifestyle limits long-term relationships and continuity in specific industries.
  • VCA: The Visa role would allow you to build deep expertise in payments, giving you a strong industry-specific profile. After 5 years, you might be seen as a thought leader in payments, with strong potential to move into Visa's senior leadership or expand to other industry-related opportunities (e.g., fintech or other large payments companies). It’s a more specialized track, but could be just as impactful if you want to go deeper into a specific industry.

Recommendation

If you're passionate about payments and industry-specific work, VCA can offer a great opportunity to leverage your expertise in a highly dynamic sector, with a clear path to senior leadership within Visa or other similar companies. If, however, you value diversity of challenges and the ability to pivot between industries, MBB would provide you with more broad strategic experiences and leadership roles across various sectors.

The key is to assess whether you’re more excited about industry depth in payments or consulting breadth across multiple industries over the next 5 years.

I’d be happy to help you think through a more detailed pros and cons list or even a mock conversation to clarify your decision! 💬

Best, Alessa
