Hello everyone,

I hope you are doing well :)

OW - I had a screening call today with OW recruiter which went well and she has asked me for my availability for the interviews which I will share in the email by tomorrow or day after tomorrow. They are quite flexible with the interview slots.

McKinsey - I have applied for the McKinsey JA position and they will get back to me by 18th FEB regarding the outcome. I do not know dates for McKinsey interview in March yet.

My preference is McKinsey. Mckinsey interviews will be held in March. I would like to have my OW interview first and then Mck interview so that I can learn from the mistakes from OW interview in case I do any ;)

Questions:

1 - Should I mention to Mck recruiter that I have OW interview schedule? Should I take OW's name?

2 - Do I need to share the email proof to McKinsey recruiter?

3 - Does mentioning this have some positive impact on the outcome from McKinsey?

Hey there,

  1. I'd tell McK if you have any scheduling conflicts OR if you want to have the interview up to a certain date to decide between both (if you receive an offer from both). You can tell them you have another interview, no need to mention OW but I would mention that McK is your preference
  2. No. Definitely not. :-)

Cheers,

Florian

I saw that you added a 3rd question: No benefit for your McKinsey application if you mention it. :-)

A sensible approach! As for your questions:

  1. Yes, let them know. It’s more or less expected of you i.e. that you are interviewing with other firms if you want to become a management consultant. No need to mention the OW name, just say it’s another top firm.
  2. 100% not
  3. It doesn’t hurt mentioning it, as long as you convey that McKinsey is your top choice. However, there’s limited upside to that since McKinsey uses very clear criteria for yes/no decisions and whether you’re interviewing with someone else isn’t one of them.

Best of luck!

You don't need to mention specifically OW, but you can mention that you will be starting the interviewing process with a competitor, and as such you want to make sure that the Mck interviews are not too late (and share with them the expected interview dates). My guess is that it means you would want to interview with Mck early March, and have a second round not much afterwards.

However, I believe you can wait until you have confirmation on the first round of OW (or the answer from Mck) to know if that is going to be an issue.

You won't need to share any proof, and it has no impact on the outcome of getting the interview (having an offer could be a different story).

Hi there,

1 - Should I mention to Mck recruiter that I have OW interview schedule? Should I take OW's name?

You can tell them you have interviews coming up and just wanted to make sure that the McK interview occurs within a reasonable timeframe so that you are not left with an offer decision before interviewing with McK.

2 - Do I need to share the email proof to McKinsey recruiter?

No

3 - Does mentioning this have some positive impact on the outcome from McKinsey?

No

Hi!

I completely do not understand your questions. Why would you even mention OW to McKinsey? Let alone “proving” it. This doesn't serve any purpose, unless you want to convey that you are “in demand” (but this rarely works with Tier2 competitors).

Just schedule your interviews in a reasonable manner. Tell the McKinsey recruiter that you are available to interview from Date X onwards (e.g., March 15). That's it. YOU decide when you interview.

So you schedule your OW interviews for end of February, and your McKinsey interviews for mid March. Don't invent problems that don't exist. ;)

Cheers, Sidi

Hi there,

There was a similar question here recently:

https://www.preplounge.com/en/consulting-forum/mckinsey-and-oliver-wyman-interview-12617

In terms of your questions:

1 - Should I mention to Mck recruiter that I have OW interview schedule? Should I take OW's name?

Not until you have an offer from OW or a conflict in terms of the day of the interview (eg same day). If you get an offer, you can leverage it to speed up the process with McKinsey. You won’t really have real leverage until you get an offer (most candidates are exactly in your situation).

2 - Do I need to share the email proof to McKinsey recruiter?

No (see answer 1)

3 - Does mentioning this have some positive impact on the outcome from McKinsey?

No. However, if you get an OW offer this could help to speed up the process with McKinsey to help you to make a decision

If you get first the OW offer, it’s not a big issue. At that stage you can:

  • Ask for more time to think and reach out to McKinsey then. At that stage, you will have leverage to accelerate things
  • Sign with OW and cancel if you get the McKinsey offer. Not ideal, but could be the only alternative if you don’t manage to postpone the deadline

Best,

Francesco

Hi there,

1 - Should I mention to Mck recruiter that I have OW interview schedule? Should I take OW's name? → I dont think you have to hide anything, the recruiter are aware candidates apply to more than 1 company very likely. They wont report to anyone that you are interviewing with other companies.

2 - Do I need to share the email proof to McKinsey recruiter? → No need, I wouldn't do it

3 - Does mentioning this have some positive impact on the outcome from McKinsey? → unlikely from my perspective, unless you are a very senior hire, expert hire

Good luck,

Lucie

Ex-McKinsey / 100% offer rate / LBS / Principle driven / Real case/ If you get the interview, you should get the offer!

Hi there. Simple solution is as below:

- Schedule the OW interview asap (assuming you're prepared :))

- Schedule the McKinsey interview on a date after the date set for OW interview

- DO NOT mention anything about OW to McKinsey, neither to OW about McKinsey. Just know both dates by heart

- If you need an excuse to schedule an interview after certain date, use a personal excuse, like you will be out of town for a conference or sth. No one will verify this and this saves you all the effort for lengthy explanation

All the best with the upcoming interviews!

Hello!

I wouldn´t tell Mckinsey if they don´t ask you or if you don´t have a scheduling conflict. What for?
