Incoming Strategy&: Switching From Corporate To Deals/M&A

Hi,

I'm starting as an FT Associate (the post-undergrad role) at S& in London in 2022. Although I stated a preference for the Deals/M&A team in my application, I was assigned to the Corporate Strategy team (meaning that my chances for PE recruitment went from slim to non-existent). Given that the two teams have different onboarding and training in the first month, is it possible for me to switch the teams before starting or should I wait with a 'transfer' request until I'm in the office for a bit? Does anyone have any experience with moving between Corporate and Deals within S&? Thanks!

Hi there,

Quite honestly, your situation doesn't sound promising. If you weren't given the Deals/M&A team to start with, you'll have to wait years before you're transfered (if you are at all).

You need to think about whether you're ok with Corporate Strategy or not. If not, you need to firmly tell them you will have to rescind the contract if they can't fit you into the Deals/M&A team (but be prepared for them to say no).

Thanks for the insight! Would you advise contacting HR or asking some Deals partners directly? S& is the best offer I have so far so definitely won't be able to tell them it's Deals or I leave but would still like to try asking

You should reach out to them and re-state your preference.

I dont' think there will be a strong opportunity to transfer between teams after you are initially assigned to one of them and actually start working there.

Hello!

Congratulations!!

I think it´s difficult for you to have a change now, but not impossible. For sure it´s worth a well structured talk to HR.

If not, you can always push for the change once you have built yourself some reputation and credentials in the company.

Hope it helps!

Cheers,

Clara

Hi there,

Congratulations on the offer!

I agree with Ian and Pedro, I don’t think it is possible for you to switch immediately. However, you can talk with HR, align with them on your preferences and verify with them the possible options and timeline.

Best,

Francesco

Hi OP,

sorry for bothering you, I am wondering if you made the transfer successfully at the end? How did the HR respond to your ask? Was such change normally possible within S&?  Thanks a lot!
