Has McKinsey blocked me?

Hello everyone,

I had applied for the JA position (McKinsey) last year in December and got rejection after the game based test.

I have improved my profile so thought to give one more chance and reached out to the same recruiter and she asked me to wait for another 6 months. I reached out to some of the partners so that I can apply early and do not have to wait for another 5 months. The partner looped in the same recruiter and again I got the same reply from her.

Then I reached out to other partners on email and LinkedIn as I wanted to apply for the generalist track. I got reply from a couple of them on LinkedIn and they really liked my profile and asked me to send an email to their email address so that they can put me in touch with another partner who have experience in Retail and Consumer goods (I have experience in Retail and Consumer goods sectors).

I sent two emails to the partner but he did not receive it. I sent the screenshot of the email on LinkedIn and the partner was like this has never happened before and asked me to send the email to his personal email address where he received my email.

There was another similar incident where the partner did not receive my email.

Does it mean that McKinsey has blocked me as I was trying to reapply a couple of times in less than 1 year and had approached around 20-30 partners?

Hey there,

Given how tight McKinsey's email policy is and the fact that you sent emails to 20-30 partners, I could definitely imagine that your email address somehow ended up on a spam/block list.

I would call (!) HR and ask them directly and definitely overthink the spam/shotgun approach.

Cheers,

Florian

Hi there,

Q: Does it mean that McKinsey has blocked me as I was trying to reapply a couple of times in less than 1 year and had approached around 20-30 partners?

I don’t think they went so far as to block you. However, given you received feedback twice to wait, I would not recommend to insist.

I would suggest to just wait the extra 5 months and apply then as recommended – if you try to bypass the recruiter again, it may backfire. It is not that much time anyway.

Best,

Francesco

That seems to be a technical IT issue, I don't think Mckinsey would block candidates' emails for the whole firm. On the other hand, after a few partners put you on the block sender list in Outlook, the server may block your email address for the whole firm.

Having said that, let me underline that you in fact risk getting on the HR permanent reject list. Your behavior is not professional at all.

Hi there,

I don't think they've blocked you but I am really concerned by your decision to only only ignore the recruiter but go around him/her. Then, to not only go around him/her but aggressively spam 20-30 partners.

This type of behavior is going to get you in trouble on the job. Be careful!

I recommend you wait 5 months as they indicated. Build up your other skills and bide your time. 5 months is nothing in the grand scheme of things.

Hello,

I doubt the firm blocked you directly - this is most likely a technical issue, perhaps somewhere somehow your email flagged up as spam. If this only happened 1 or 2 times out of the 20+ emails you sent, it is unlikely to be a blocking issue.

I admire your tenacity with contacting partners, however unfortunately the McKinsey reapplication ban is standard procedure that applies for all. Those may be very useful contacts down the line, but I would advise you to wait for the 5 months as instructed, and not go around HR.

There's no reason why McKinsey would block you, unless there have been ethical concerns.  It sounds like a technical issue where your email domain ID has problems with the McKinsey email system.  It might be worth using a different email ID and also listening to the recruiter's feedback.  Recruiters don't make the hiring decisions but they are the ‘gate keepers’ where undermining them won't help you either.

Hi there,

I doubt it's possible to have your email blocked by the Firm - I've never heard of this before.

However, it does sound like you had quite an aggressive reach out program. To be fair, it might make sense to actually wait the way they suggested until you are able to reapply.

Best,

Cristian

Hello!

That sounds very very weird to me tbh, I don´t even think McK has the capabilities to block your address so none in the firm receives it. If it were the case, not even recruiting would get those mails, and they do, right?

Cheers,

Clara

Most companies tend to leverage 3rd party networking hardware to handle spam filtering as first line of defence.

If you are familiar with email marketing, there are certain guidelines email providers need to follow. Every email received is assessed on a whole host of different variables, and given a spam score. If it falls below a threshold it will get caught and trapped at the 3rd party hardware level. It is rarely ever checked by the network administrator for false positives, so those old emails are probably in a black hole or been purged.

So don't spam!

Hi,

so, first of all - very interesting that you didn´t give up and reached out to so many partners :D I haven´t seen that before.

What I can tell you is that you cannot develop enough within just 1 year. After a rejection, it is completely normal that you wait 1,5 - 2 years.

I really recommend that you wait the next 5 months and apply then again.

Nevertheless, wish you all the best. Reach out to me if you have further questions.

Cheers, Ajmal
