Hi all,

I am applying to MBB firms. I have a BSc and MSc but no MBA. My grades are average, will taking the GMAT exam and scoring more than 700 improve my chances of landing an interview?

Thank you.

Hi there,

A strong GMAT (730+) could help a bit but it is not worth the investment in time if your only goal is to improve your profile for a consulting application. I would consider taking the GMAT only if you are planning to apply for an MBA in the future.

To maximize your chances you could consider the following:

  1. Improve your CV
  2. Improve your Cover Letter
  3. Find a referral

You can find more on referrals here:

https://www.preplounge.com/en/consulting-forum/hey-everyonehope-all-is-well-3176

I do a single session to cover all the 3 parts, with samples for CV and Cover and the transcripts to use to land a referral. In case you are interested please feel free to PM me.

Best,

Francesco

Hello!

No, not really. If you have it already it would not harm to put it in the CV, but that is about it.

GMAT is useful for BS for the MBA later, not for consulting processes.

Hope it helps!

Cheers,

Clara

There may be nuances by firm and office but generally it is marginal and will not influence your chances of an interview invitation. If anything it may slightly compensate for your grades.

Hi there,

The GMAT will not move the needle here. Try to invest the time into networking and getting referrals instead. This will have a bigger impact on your chances.

Once you are invited to the interview, it's a level playing field, and you will solely be assessed based on your interview and aptitude test performance.

Kind regards,

Florian

Not really, rather focus on making an impactful CV and cover letter. Get a referral rather than applying directly.

Hi,

Unless you can get a perfect GMAT score it will not move the needle. Considering the odds you better invest in case pre, networking and CV building.

Best,
Iman

I don't think it will make a huge impact. If you're GMAT is outstanding you can put it on the CV, but even then it wouldn't really make a difference.

Hi,

GMAT requires a lot of time, however, the impact on screening is unclear. I would not recommend taking the GMAT just for the resume

Hi there!

I agree with the experts that it wouldn't really affect your chances to get invited to the interview, especially if it's taken only as a way to make your profile look better.

What really increases your chances is:

  • a strong profile (CV and Cover Letter)
  • a good referral

Do you need any help with that?

Cheers,
GB

Hi,

A high GMAT score is definitely a plus. It will probably allow you to skip standardized test (e.g. McK Imbellus), but it will not give you an edge in passing through the screening stage.

Invest more on relevant experiences and networking!

Hope this helps.

Best,

Antonello

Hi there,

If your sole goal of the GMAT is for your resume, stop now. That is a waste of time and has extremely low ROI for you.

With that same time, you could get certified in data analytics, talk to 100 potential referers, apply to dozens of firms...I think you get the point

A 700 GMAT is not going to move the needle!
