Does resume matter after screening process?

So basically what the title says. If one were to move on from the screening process, does the resume still have an impact or is it all about the interviews from this stage?

Hi there,

Yes and no. Technically your fit is about how you perform when answering the fit questions.

That said, the interviewer sees your resume and it's literally their first impression of you! If you have an impressive and interesting resume, of course they'll naturally be more open to you as a candidate during the interview.

After screening it is mostly the interview performance. The quality of your CV gets you into the interview, the quality of the interview gets you selected.

However, you can be asked personal/fit questions based on your CV and sometimes your case can also be linked to specific parts of your CV.

Generally speaking it’s only about the interviews.

The exception would be if one is interviewing for an expert or technical role, where it still may have an impact if they have to decide between several candidates.

But in all situations you need to pass the interview to get the offer.

What’s the question behind the question?

If you are wondering whether a weaker resume will hold you back or a stronger resume will help you out at the interview stage, the answer is no. You either do well on the interviews or you don’t.

I’ve been in decision meetings and 95% of the time, they don’t refer at all to the candidate’s background. By that point, it’s all on a first name basis, and how the candidate answered the questions.

The reason is that it’s the recruiters job to assess the resume and and whether the candidate might be a good fit. If they think so, the interviewers‘ job is to objectively assess talent and skills, not background and experience.

Hope that helps,

Allen

Hi there,

Q: If one were to move on from the screening process, does the resume still have an impact or is it all about the interviews from this stage?

The interviewer may ask questions on your CV, so in that sense it can have an impact on the fit part. However, it won’t impact your performance in the case interview as that’s based on your answers in that particular part.

Best,

Francesco

Hey there,

Depends on the firm I guess.

If we are actually talking about pure performance, then no. Once you cleared the screening, every candidate needs to meet the same bar.

That's how meritocracy works, which is at the core of all MBBs.

Cheers,

Florian

The resume does not ‘matter’ in terms of counting formally towards your interview. However as Ian said, it is the first impression any interviewer has of you so it matters from that perspective. It will also be used a lot by partners to guide conversations around what work you have done in the past or your interests and skills etc.
