Hi, does my referee have to be in the office I wish to work in? It has a very sparse number of grads from my school.

I am a non-target student with only referral and networking in my bag, my school has a number of grads working in MBB and tier 2 in dispersed locations. Can I seek referral and apply at my local (school's location) office and ultimately ask for rotation?

Generally no!

Companies like McKinsey operate under the One-Firm principle, meaning that location isn´t all that important and someone from location A can refer a candidate from location B for location C.

Informal channels may be better established between your referee and the recruiter if they´re in the same location. However, that shouldn´t make much of a difference since MBB firms are very process driven and don´t allow for much backchanneling.

Hope this helps!

No it doesn't (usually) make a difference.

It can be slightly better if your local office is a small one, as the recommendation process may be more informal. For a large office, there's absolutely no difference.

Applying to an office and asking for rotation later has pros and cons. It can be a good idea if that location is in more need of people than other locations (otherwise it's actually the opposite). You risk your rotation not being accepted, or having to wait for a while.

Hope this helps!

They do not! Having a referral period is extremely beneficial!

Yes you can apply at your local office and ask for a rotation after 2-3 years (there are plenty of Q&As here on how to successfully do this after a few years at the firm!)

Hi!

Your referee can work in a different office.

And yes, you can apply at your local office and eventually ask for a rotation, which is not always granted.

Good luck,

Anto

Referee can be from any location..a referral is better that no referral at all

Its better to have someone from the same location as they could be known in the business & will/might have some leverage. But not a problem if not.

  • Typically there should NOT be a difference in either case - especially for Accenture.
  • Applying to the local office and then moving later may sound juicy but it may not always materialize exactly like that.
