CV Content

Hello all,

I am writing my CV and am not sure which style is the best.

Walmart, Regional Manager, 2018 - Present

Analysed hourly store revenues in Excel. Introduced promotional offers for low revenue stores. Increased profits 90%.

Above is in the format, how I did it, what I did, what the result was.

I am not sure if the above format or maybe if I should put the result at the beginning to make it stand out a bit more?

Increased profits 90%. Analysed hourly store revenues in Excel. Introduced promotional offers for low revenue stores.

Also, are short sentences ok, or do I need to make it more readable?

Increased profits by 90% by analysing hourly store revenues in MS Excel to introduce promotional offers for low revenue hours.

Many thanks

Hi Nick,

This is indeed an interesting question which is probably relevant for quite a lot of users, so I am happy to provide my perspective on it:

  • Generally speaking, I would advise you to go with short sentences, especially since it will look more consistent independent of whether you have quantified results or not.
  • Still, I would advise you to either go with one short sentence listing your accomplishments or with bullet points per key accomplishments. The full stop in between looks rather odd.
  • Lastly, I would advise you to omit mentioning MS Excel with your accomplishments as it is somehow assumed you used a spreadsheet software anyways. In case it is important to you to mention it at all, I would advise you to add a software/ IT skills section.

In case you want a more detailed discussion on how to best prepare your CV for your upcoming consulting applications, please feel free to contact me directly.

I hope this helps,

Hagen

I prefer the first, and definitively prefer “natural language” sentences, as you have in the end.

By the way, drop the reference to “excel”. It doesn't add value (knowing how to use excel at the basic user level is expected, so there's no extra credit for that).

Typically the best way to write the sentence is using the XYZ rule as popularised by Google. It goes as the following:

Accomplished [X] as measured by [Y], by doing [Z].

By this rule, your last option of the single-sentence form is the best pick.

HOWEVER, I would suggest the following:

Sentence 1: Improved store profits by 90% by boosting sales in off-peak hours through time-specific promo offers

Sentence 2 (optional): Identified profiles and purchase habits for customers in off-peak hours based on granular store data analysis
