Hi all,

I am looking for online consulting courses with MBB mindset. This is not for interview preparation and googling really brings many choices with no clarity which one is good and worthing. So, do you know good courses to recommend?

Thanks

Hello,

I think it is great to try to train your mindset not solely on cases but also on the approach and skillset that you will develop in MBB.

1. An example of course you might want to follow with Digital Transformation on coursera (BCG & university of Virginia)

2. I know MBB developed several podcasts / newsletter with free access - this would be a good way as well to acquire strategic way to look at key topics (e.g. BCG bites newsletter)

Don't hesitate to reach I it if you have questions!

Cheers

Hi Buddy,

Sorry to disappoint you but developing an MBB mindset may not come easily with an online course. You have to practice it at work or by solving cases.

There are some interesting resources/books to help you.

If you are really serious read 1 and 2 and practice them regularly at work.
1. Read the book The pyramid principle by Barbara Minto. I don't think this book needs any explanation. It teaches you the art of structured communication.

2. Read the book “ The mind of the Strategist” - Kenichi Ohmae. Very hard to read book, but each page of this book is GOLD

If you are bit lazy,
3. Read a few case books. I have an old case book that does a decent job. DM me and I can send it to you.

4. Also watch case videos from the official MBB‘s YouTube channe.

However, if you still want to check out something online you can check Firm Learning youtube channel which is pretty decent.

Do reach out if you have any questions.

Regards,
Gowtham

Hi there,

Are you looking for opportunities to learn some of the key consulting skills to apply in another job? And if so, what skills are you interested in?

This is actually on my list as a career coach. However, this isn't easy at all and there's a reason why people spend 2-3 years in consulting to learn this. It can't simply be trained outside of the actual job.

Some of the general skills that make MBB very desirable professionals are:

  • Being very good at cutting through the noise and straightening people out producing that noise
  • Being very objective/problem driven with a systematic approach to deriving/defining them
  • Being very structured in developing an approach and  executing a workstream
  • Communicating verbally (top down) and through slides (key tool of any consultant)
  • Developing and telling a compelling story around whatever it is they're pursuing
  • Building trust based relationships and becoming a trusted advisor to clients
  • Convincing people of pursuing a particular path and achieving impact through actual decision makers

The list goes on and on… Some of this can be learned outside MBB, other things simply cannot.

Curious to hear what other experts are thinking!

Hi there,

Highbridge Academy is a great program for training how to be a consultant - feel free to message my for a referral code

Impact Consulting is also great for getting real life consulting experience (they have pro bono consulting projects you can join).

In terms of building up your MBB mindset, it's going to be difficult to learn the MBB thinking through just an online course. You need interaction, live feedback, exercises etc. My recommendation would be:

  1. Coaching
  2. An academy/program (live classroom)
  3. Daily reading of BCG Insights, McK Insights, or their podcasts
