Consulting interview

How shoud I organize my time and interviews if I want several offers from MBB, tier 2 and tier 3 consulting companies? Simultaneously or one by one?

I want to practise solving cases with real cases and at the same time increase chance of getting an offer.

Thank you all in advance.

Hi,

I think you are conflating 2 different issues, based on how you've written your question. Organizing your interview schedule does not equate to having a strong application and excellent core skills (which is what will ultimately help you land multiple offers).

From my POV, organization of interviews is more a ‘fine-tune’ or the last measure to get you ‘match ready’ (to use a sports term). But it really doesn't help you pass the interview and ‘get multiple offers’. No matter what order you order your interviews, if you don't meet the mark, you don't meet the mark

That being said, let's assume you've already secured interviews from all MBB, Tier 2 and Tier 3 firms of your choice

  • There are various ‘strategies’ and ultimately it really depends on practicality (i.e. some firms just get back faster than others) and personal preference
  • Doing Tier 3 → Tier 2 → MBB: the thinking behind this would be to do progressively more difficult/stressful interviews leading up to the top choice
  • Doing 1 MBB → Tier 3/2 → other MBB: the thinking behind this is to get a sense first of what a stressful/top tier firm interview is like, figure out what your weak points are and then hone through more practice before trying again

I've known people who have gotten their choice offers through many different permutations of interview order. So, there's really no one ‘right’ way

  • I go back to the point around having a solid foundation and core interview skills
  • Because what happens if, for various reasons, you only secure ONE MBB interview, and that is your only chance? You wouldn't want to screw that up anyway

All the best with your prep!

Hi there,

This is an amazing question that unfortunately not many people ask!

And it's also one of the areas where you will get an amazing benefit from working with a coach.

What you need is an application strategy. In short, you need to define your target firms and roles, divide them into batches and then apply to them in the inverse order of preference, using the interview process as a training ground for the final rounds with your top preferred firms.

Happy to support you in developing this in a manner that's tailored to you.

Sharing with you here an article on how to network and get referrals to increase your chances of getting more interviews.

Best,

Cristian

Hi there,

I think this is an interesting question that may be relevant for many people. I would be happy to share my thoughts on it:

  • First of all, I would highly advise you to reassess your motivation for getting multiple offers, as ultimately you can only have one job. While (strategy consulting) applications are a numbers game, the goal shouldn't be to have multiple offers just for the sake of it.
  • Generally speaking, though, I would advise you to approach each company one by one, starting with the least favorable and moving towards the most. It's possible that there will be some overlaps, but as long as they’re minimal, it won't negatively impact your interviews.

If you would like a more detailed discussion on how to address your specific situation, please don't hesitate to contact me directly.

Best,

Hi there,

I couldn't agree more with Christian here!

People hire wealth managers to make sure their funds are properly invested/allocated so as to optimize returns/chances of making $.

A case coach optimizes your application strategy and case prep as to optimize your chances of getting the offer and making $.

There is not a simple answer here and it does require a full conversation. Ultimately, you need to be efficient in your case prep, you need to track all of your applications AND networking calls/referrals, and you need to adjust your application timing based on what happens (with networking/leads, with the market/hiring, etc.)

Hi there,

you won't be able to perfectly time your interviews. Some companies will take a long time to get back to you, others might be faster. Be that as it may, getting interviews is not a guarantee either so whatever invitation you get, you want to make the most of that chance. This means you should be in full swing of case preparation by the time you sent out any of your applications.

If you want to increase your chances of performing well in the MBB interviews by leveraging your experiences from prior interviews, you should try to submit your first batch of applications to your Tier 2 and 3 choices and wait a bit before approaching MBB (assuming that you are not bound by set application windows specific to your region).

Again, this is not fully under your control but that's the bit of wiggle room you've got.

Good luck

Please define several offers- 2, 3, 4?

Not sure what your thought process is here and whether its efficient to start your prep with such a goal in mind. Rather focus on preparing comprehensively and give your best in the interviews. One interview at a time. Let the results come your way.

If you prep really really well for MBB, most other firms get covered. Just be aware of slight differences in style in case you are also considering Big4/Accenture→ their case interviews in not like MBB.

Happy to have a quick chat (free) if you need more guidance. Feel free to send a direct message.

All the best.
