My application status switched from in-progress to closed few days after my first round interview. Does it mean that I got rejected?

I haven't heard back from HR yet, but it has been about a week from my last interview.

Hi there,

First of all, I am sorry to hear about the misleading information within your McKinsey recruiting process!

I think this is an interesting question that may be relevant for many people. I would be happy to share my thoughts on it:

  • It is most likely just a systems error. However, it is odd that you haven't yet heard back from the recruiter.
  • Moreover, please keep in mind that the current tight economic situation has led to a recruiting slowdown and sometimes a freeze in strategy consulting, especially with McKinsey, which has recently canceled (sometimes with the motivation to reapply in September 2023) most of its recruiting activities.

If you would like a more detailed discussion on how to address your specific situation, please don't hesitate to contact me directly.

Best,

Hagen

Hello A,

The "closed" status on your application could indicate that the company has made a decision regarding your candidacy. However, it is not always indicative of rejection.

It's possible that the company has moved you to the next stage of the hiring process, such as scheduling a second-round interview, and the status change is simply reflecting the completion of the first-round interviews.

The best way to confirm your application status is to reach out to the HR representative or recruiter who has been handling your application. They should be able to provide you with an update on the status of your application and whether you are still being considered for the role.

Best of luck!!

Hi there,

I would suggest to give it a little bit more time and then contact the recruiter to get a feedback on your first round interview.

It can potentially be a mistake, because if the decision has been made not to continue the process after the first round they would have communictaed it to you. Usually what takes time is to make the decision as it requires input from multiple interviewers and they also want to look at the permornace vs other candidates.

Best,

Lilit

Hi there,

It doesn't look promising, but they should send an email to formally clarify the results of the interview in any case. If they don’t, I would wait one week from the interview and reach out to HR to clarify.

Best,

Francesco

Hi there,

It might. It might not. We don't know.

Ultimately, you just need to wait a bit longer. I would reach out in another week or two.

Please don't sit around waiting. Apply to other firms!

Network, review your resume, keep casing (and fixing any issues that may have occured in your McK interview), etc.

Fingers crossed for you!

Hi there,

That could also be an error.

Give it another week and hopefully in this time they'll reach back to you with the result of the first round. Try not to read too much into it for now.

Best,

Cristian

Hello,

It is quite possible that you have been rejected. Try reaching out to HR in a week if you have not heard back by then.

Keep applying to other firms in the mean time and do not get bogged down as firms are indeed slowing down recruiting.

Best,

Rushabh
