Hi there,

I am an an experienced professional and I had interviews for the final round last week. HR told me that it went well but that it was perhaps a bit tight on the case part regarding my seniority and that they would like to give me a final interview to close the process.

One of the case from final interview was really unexpected : how much would it cost to regulate digital illiteracy in france between now and the presidential elections ? I was asked to answer directly and to think out loud (it was more like a market sizing) and it was hard to follow properly the framework of a case study.

What do you think ?  I’ll be happy to get your feedbacks on what to specifically work on as they didn’t give me any strong advice on the case study.

Hi there,

Q: What do you think? I’ll be happy to get your feedbacks on what to specifically work on as they didn’t give me any strong advice on the case study.

Very difficult to answer as we don’t know how you performed. You mentioned a market sizing question, but also for that, we don’t know how you structured it, so it is difficult to comment on whether there are improvements needed or not.

If you are keeping track of the most challenging cases you have done, I would recommend reviewing again the sections you found more difficult for them (including those in the interview you had) as follows:

  • Find out if there is a common mistake you are repeating (eg math, poor market sizing structure)
  • Find a way to fix that particular mistake (eg more math drills, better structure for market sizing)
  • Redo the parts of the cases where you made mistakes and verify if you have now fixed them (eg repeat the math part/market sizing where you had issues)

If you haven’t kept track of that, you should find a way to get feedback on which are the critical improvement areas from a peer/coach/current consultant so that you can identify the areas of improvement.

Good luck!

Francesco

Hi there,

This is still a structuring question with a brainstorming twist, i.e. what areas would you look at and what ideas do you have for each area that would allow us to improve digital literacy?

The way to approach this is like any other structuring/brainstorming question - from a first principles approach, identifying the key levers in a MECE way.

Even though you were prompted to think on the spot, this is still something you should be able to do on the spot, at least on a high-level for the broader buckets, and then dive deeper into it with a structured approach and communication.

The goal here is to deliver a broad answer (covers the topic well) and deep (sufficient concrete ideas for each top-level bucket). You should not present a laundry list of ideas.

Teaching how to structure properly is not something that can be done in a forum post extensively. I'd suggest you work with a coach or get my book (The 1%: Conquer Your Consulting Case Interview) where I break down how to structure any case, regardless of context or industry, in great detail and with many creative examples.

All the best,

Florian

Hi there,

Please get a case coach.

You're right on the fence. You need to show them you're capable and they're not convinced. In this make or break situation you need that extra push to get you over the line.

For digital illiteracy in france you could probably leverage the frameworks I lay out here: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1rbGLoqNIhWIB0Ux-m1aO2M9ETatHqMAU/view?usp=drive_link

Look. You did well enough to make it to the final round and get an extra round. But not enough to get the final offer. It's impossible, without interviewing you, to know what is exactly missing. And to be honest, it may be multiple things that are “ok-ish” but need to be better.

As a coach, I can only make a diagnostic and a recommendation within a coaching session. This is like stating you feel sick and asking the doctor what is the treatment - without really knowing the symptons, without being able to do any analysis or diagnostic.

This is the case where it is most worthwile to invest in order to nail the offer.

Hi there,

the good news is that you get another shot and the offer is still within reach. You should definitely inquire with HR about more feedback. You should be regarded as a “high potential” candidate at this point given that you are entering Final Round 2.0. They should have an interest in you being prepared as best as possible.

As to what you can do specifically, I have to agree with the sentiment here that this cannot be diagnosed based on the short prompt you provided. But if there ever was a situation where it makes sense to spend some money on a coach, this is probably as applicable as it gets.

Best of luck

While the answer is to continue working on your casing technique in general so you can answer unexpected questions as well, in this case I also recommend asking HR for detailed feedback so it can help you see where you can improve.

That's a really challenging question indeed.

Also, it happens rather often that you get an ‘extra’ round to decide whether to give you the offer, so don't be too concerned about it.

I'm not sure, though, what your question is. What can we specifically advise you on?

Best,
Cristian
