What internship would be a good fit?

Hello together :)

In the past summer, I have done an internship in a boutique specialising in digital strategy consulting, which was rather operational than strategic.

Since my goal is to become a consultant at MBB after my Bachelor (currently 3rd semester at swiss target university), would you say a business development internship in a grown-up start-up would be a good fit as a next step?

Afterwards T1 a consulting internship might be possible, right?

Thank you very much, I am looking forward to your insights :)

So, if I understand this correctly, you are looking to get into an internship now with the hope of later getting into MBB? Do you think this is the right way to approach such career moves?

Rather, invest your time & effort in something that you really want to do, will enjoy doing it, learn and create something worthwhile for yourself and people around you. MBB will happen not necessarily because you have a particular brand or title but because you can passionately talk about your experience and bring worth while skills!

Please have a look at this article for plenty of guidance & tips on this subject- https://www.preplounge.com/en/articles/how-do-i-know-which-career-is-right-for-me

Hi there,

First of all, congratulations on the career path so far!

This is indeed an interesting question which is probably relevant for quite a lot of users, so I am happy to provide my perspective on it:

  • Generally speaking, the more relevant work experience you gather during your studies, the more likely it will be tha you will be invited to the interviews and the more easy your first months at your future employer might be (even if the lead is quickly diminishing).
  • Relevant work experience for strategy consulting companies is considered everything where you are exposed to an international corporate setting and/ or have a lot of opportunities for entrepreneurial drive.
  • As such, in case it is a “full-grown” startup less likely to completely fail and disappear from the surface, and in case you have a lot of opportunities to further drive the company, I would consider it to be relevant for a strategy consulting company.

In case you want a more detailed discussion on how to best decide on your next career steps, please feel free to contact me directly.

I hope this helps,

Hagen

Hi there,

It sounds like you're on the right track and thinking through things the right way. Ultimately, any internship where you get exposure to business/strategic thinking, client relationships, analytics, etc. is going to help. A bizdev internship in a start-up adds to your resume. I wouldn't say it's the most helpful internship you could get, but I could see it pairing nicely with your prior role.

You are overthinking this. If it is a good brand, or an exciting role that requires drive, communication and analytical thinking, you are good. Digital topics are great as well, because consulting firms need more and more people that understand technology.

Ther eare many paths to get into consulting. Take one that you will actually enjoy. That is what will really make you successful.

And by the way, no one is really successful doing the things they don't really want to do.

Hello!

There are many maaaany paths to consulting, among which, of course, the one you mention.

Look for things such as impact, a big and possibly international scope, clear responsibilities.

Hope it helps!

Cheers,

Clara
