I was recently asked this by a CXO from a large firm.

I told him that I had read Dune, by Frank Herbert. (I hadn't watched the movies yet).

I told him that I found the author's ability to research so deeply on so many various topics and his ability to bring it together in such a structured story was incredible. Not only in a structured manner but in a way that was easy to understand and palatable to a whole range of people. It is a timeless novel.

Herbert also did this without the internet! He researched using books, newspapers, letters, inspiration from his personal experiences, his travels, and his interactions with people from different backgrounds.

Frank researched religions, e.g., Islam, Buddhism, science, e.g., laser-cut furniture, AI (!!! literally how we ask ChatGPT things—Frank wrote about it), the animal kingdom, political ideologies, the history of political leaders through all the ages, linguistics, and semantics, particularly the work of S. I. Hayakawa.

The CXO found this response fascinating and retorted that he last read the book as a teen but would read it again.

I think my answer demonstrated my ability to not only appreciate the book for the story but also the effort of the author.

I am reading a book of an African American woman writer, called “The Parable of the Sower”. It is a dystopian future where we can see many environmental and societal issues, that have their roots in the current situation that we experience. The narrator is a late teenage girl, for whom we have the opportunity to guide through this world as her own personal diary. What I find fascinating about that book is the writing, the fact that it is based in 2024 - the year we're on haha- and how our lives might look if we succeed in tackling climate change.

I am currently reading a book called “The Power of Moments”. It is a book that discusses powerful moments that we all encounter in our lives. They provide notes and examples of how to let these moments impact you in a positive, life altering way. The most powerful takeaway I have thus far from the book is that you have to be the catalyst of your own change. Identify these big moments and act on them.
