Hi there,
This is a great question that I haven't seen before! I'd say it boils down to any combination of the following:
- Ambition (desire to be at the top/"reach Partner")
- Money
- Love of the work
- Desire to have big impact/drive change
- Risk-aversion
- It "just happens" - year by year then suddenly 10 years have passed
- Don't know what else to do

- Genuinly enjoys problem solving, being client facing, variety of work, fast paced work environment
- Passionate about functional skills and/or industry (s) in an advisory capacity & builds specialised skills which are in demand
- Comfortable and successful in "sales environment"

Hi, in addition to the bullets already mentioned I would also talk about the partner role, which is a great synthesis of business content, sales, top client interface, leadership, prestige.
Best,
