Waiting for feedback after final round at Mckinsey

Hello, I recently interviewed for a product manager position at Mckinsey. I had a first screening call with HR  then 4 interview rounds - 3 with Principal PMs and one with Associate Partner 2 weeks ago (2 rounds each week). I thought that was the final round but HR didn't provide full details. Last week, they scheduled a meeting with another Principal PM to know the team better and to ask more questions. When I entered the meeting, we did ask each other questions but it seemed like an interview. Although the person gave me more details about the different products and asked me more questions about what area would I like to work in and the kind of role, I think it went ok not the best.

After this I didn't hear anything from HR or interviewers. The HRs were non-responsive even after my mails. I also sent a mail to Associate Partner because of some urgency at my current work and at the same time received a mail from HR. I think it was a coincidence or not, no idea since the time zone is very different. The HR has scheduled a call for tomorrow.

My question is does that mean I am rejected? I see usually one of the interviewers or partners calls you when you are selected. I also see the same job posting reactivated on LinkedIn and some other positions. Maybe it is an automated task.

Hi there,

First of all, congratulations on going through the entire application process with McKinsey!

I would be happy to share my thoughts on your question:

  • Unfortunately, no one can seriously answer the question whether or not you will receive an offer, but I can confirm that the method of providing feedback does not affect the outcome. I'll keep my fingers crossed that you receive good news.

You can find more on this topic here: How to deal with a rejection from a consulting company.

If you would like a more detailed discussion on your specific situation, please don't hesitate to contact me directly.

Best,

Hagen

Hey there,

McKinsey will always communicate outcomes with you. You won’t always have the full details / insights as to why their communication cadence may be slower vs expected, so it’s best not to speculate.

Wishing you all the best

Hi there!

This sounds frustrating and a bit confusing.

It doesn't mean that you were rejected. Don't assume that and lose hope until you actually hear it from them.

Maybe there was an operational issue on their side.

Hope you get more news soon!
Best,
Cristian

Hi there,

If you were out, they would let you know in clear terms. Try to not overthink about it. In my experience McKinsey usually calls to either schedule another round or to talk about next steps.

Fingers crossed!

Best,

Mari

hey there!

It’s hard to say definitively, but based on your description, here’s what might be going on:

  • The extra meeting with the Principal PM sounds like a "fit" or "team match" interview, which often happens near the final decision stage, especially for product roles.
  • HR scheduling a call could go either way — it’s not unusual for rejections to be delivered via HR, but offers sometimes are too, particularly when logistics, preferences, or team alignment need clarification.
  • The job reposting is not a definitive signal. Positions are often kept open or reactivated for pipeline reasons, and it’s not necessarily tied to your candidacy.

It’s not a clear rejection yet. Wait for the call, stay calm, and approach it with an open mind.

They will always come back with an answer. Having said this, it is not clear to me what is going on there.
