Trying for Full Time at McK before MBA Starts

Hey Guys, I got an internal referral opportunity at McKinsey for full time position, but I'm also attending MBA at CBS in August. Is it worth trying and do I have enought time to prep? 0 case experience before. The thought process is that if I got full time will defer MBA.

Hi Anon,

I believe we already spoke yesterday :-)

I believe 1-2 months of preparation time should be sufficient to prepare for McK interviews. It depends on a few factors

  • How much time are you willing to allocate to case and PEI prep? If you can work on your prep most of the days over the coming months with a coach + other candidates + practice drills to polish your strengths and work on your weaknesses, you should definitely be able to get ready for McKinsey
  • What is your baseline skill / intrinsic capability to solve business problems, broken down into things such as creativity, structuring, chart interpretation, quick mental math, business judgment?

Lastly, applying now is more or less risk-free. If you fail your interviews before the MBA, you will have an 80-90% chance to re-apply after graduation.

Cheers,

Florian

Why not - once you are doing your MBA, you will be one of many MBA candidates applying/interviewing for McKinsey and so I think you have an unique opportunity at hand!

If you apply now you can also apply during your MBA - this is the one case where they are more lenient about the 2 year rule. However I would suggest applying only if you are very certain about the fact that you can give it your best shot. It will not be good to apply and give a poor interview performance.

Hi there,

I agree with the rest of the coaches - this seems like a high-upside, low risk proposition.

If you fail, you can re-apply via your MBA program AND you've gotten practice/preparation already (this is a huge leg up).

If you succeed, well, there's no need for the MBA right now! (and, eventually, they'll even pay for it).

Good luck!

Since the MBA would get you past the cool off period, this is pretty much risk less - so why don't you give it a shot?

Hi there,

A total of 2 months should be enough (depending on how much time you can dedicate and on what). You can find some tips on how to do that here:

https://www.preplounge.com/en/consulting-forum/how-to-prepare-for-case-interview-in-one-week-time-8727

As mentioned in the other comments, in case you fail you should also be able to apply after the MBA again so I can’t see issues with trying.

Best,

Francesco
