Is referall neccessary for Middle East or Southeast Asia MBB and Tier 2 consulting? Is applying online is worthless?
Referral
Hi!
Applying online is not worthless. Actually, everybody has to apply online.
Referrals help because they are like an insider tap on the recruiter's shoulder that this candidate is high value and strongly recommended. I know it's a pain to get a referral in most cases, but it's definitely worth the effort considering that it significantly increases your chances of passing screening. Btw, that's as much as it does - help you pass screening, and doesn't have an influence beyond that point.

i there,
A referral isn’t necessary, but it’s helpful — especially in competitive regions like the Middle East and Southeast Asia. Here’s how it works:
- Referrals help with visibility, not guaranteed interviews
- Online applications aren’t worthless — strong profiles (top university, solid consulting/industry experience, clear impact) regularly get shortlisted without referrals
- Best approach: apply online and reach out for a short networking chat or referral — even a 10-minute LinkedIn call with a consultant from your target office can boost your chances
So, while not mandatory, referrals are a smart way to stand out — but a well-crafted application can still succeed on its own.

Hi there,
A referral is nice to have (if you have the opportunity you should leverage it), but it is not a must. There are still a good amount of candidates get through the process without referral.
Best,
Emily
Hey there, referral is not that important in Middle East or Southeast Asia. The application is the key, if your CV is strong, applying online works perfectly fine and you don’t need a referral. best, Alessa :)
Hello,
Referrals can definitely help, but they’re not a must. Plenty of people still get in through the regular online application. For MBB and Tier 2 in ME/SEA, what really matters is a strong profile and solid case prep.
