I honestly don't remember but it's worth trying out some of the guides that are provided online. 

They walk you through the approach in detail. 

If you don't manage to find out before your actual test, I'd recommend to prepare for the worst.

Not totally sure but I think you can move back and forth. That being said, I think Ian's advice about writing everything down is good - it will save you time over going back and forth all the time.

Q: In the redrock study game can I move back and forth between the investigation and analysis phases or once i finish the investigation phase I can't go back so any information that I didn't put in the journal I can't get back

In the last version of the game, you can go back to the investigation once you reach the analysis phase. However, you won’t be able to go back once you reach the Report phase.
