That said, use pen and paper! Write everything down - it doesn't take much time and it keeps your thinking super organized. If you're doing redrock right, you should not have to move back and forth…

I honestly don't remember but it's worth trying out some of the guides that are provided online.
They walk you through the approach in detail.
If you don't manage to find out before your actual test, I'd recommend to prepare for the worst.

Not totally sure but I think you can move back and forth. That being said, I think Ian's advice about writing everything down is good - it will save you time over going back and forth all the time.

In the last version of the game, you can go back to the investigation once you reach the analysis phase. However, you won’t be able to go back once you reach the Report phase.
