Strategy & Program Manager interview

Hi everyone, 

Does anyone have experience with designing programs and managing them? I am interviewing for a role that I'd like to request support with preparation. Specifically, designing strategy then converting it into programs, initiatives, OKRs etc.

Hi,

I am experienced in designing and executing strategy in various industries, and these roles are usually less about “big ideas” and more about: can you actually make things happen?

What they typically test is pretty consistent.

First, can you go from a vague goal to something concrete?
For example, if the objective is “grow revenue,” they’ll expect you to break that down into clear levers (pricing, volume, channels, etc.) — not stay at a high level.

Second (this is the big one), can you translate that into actual programs.
So not just “we should improve retention,” but:

  • what are the initiatives?
  • how do you prioritize them?
  • who owns what?

Then link it to something measurable (OKRs / KPIs). If you can’t quantify it, it usually means it’s still too abstract.

Where many people struggle is execution. They talk about ideas, but not about:

  • how you track progress
  • how you run governance (cadence, check-ins)
  • what you do when things go off track

That’s exactly what these roles care about.

If I had to simplify the flow I use:
start with the objective → break into key levers → define initiatives → prioritize → attach KPIs → explain how you’d run and track it.

Also, have 1–2 real examples ready where you actually did something like this (even partially). That makes a big difference.

Yes — this is a pretty common type of role, especially in tech / corporate strategy.

What they’re usually testing is your ability to go from high-level strategy → concrete execution.

A simple way to approach it:

1. Start from the objective
Be very clear on:

  • what are we trying to achieve? (growth, efficiency, user engagement, etc.)
  • how do we measure success? (KPIs / OKRs)

2. Break it into strategic pillars
For example:

  • product improvements
  • go-to-market
  • operations

Keep it structured and MECE.

3. Translate into initiatives
For each pillar, define:

  • specific initiatives (what exactly are we doing?)
  • owner
  • timeline
  • expected impact

This is where many candidates stay too high-level — you need to be concrete.

4. Define OKRs / metrics
Link each initiative to:

  • clear KPIs
  • targets
  • tracking cadence

Show that you think in terms of measurement and accountability.

5. Execution & governance
This is often what differentiates candidates:

  • how do you track progress?
  • how do you manage stakeholders?
  • how do you adjust if things go off track?

In the interview, they’re looking for someone who can:

  • structure a problem clearly
  • be practical (not just “strategy slides”)
  • show ownership and follow-through

A good answer usually sounds like:
“Here’s the goal → here’s how I break it down → here’s what we do → here’s how we track it → here’s how we make it work.”

hey there :)

for this role, think in a simple flow: start with a clear goal and problem, define a few key strategic priorities, then translate each into concrete initiatives with owners, timelines, and measurable OKRs. in the interview, structure your answer top down and always tie impact to metrics.

you can say something like: “I’d start by defining the objective and success metrics, then break it into 2–3 strategic pillars. For each pillar, I’d design initiatives, assign ownership, and define OKRs to track progress. My strength is bringing structure to ambiguity and making sure execution stays tightly linked to impact.”

if you have an example, briefly walk them through it end to end, that’s usually what they want to see.
