Possibility of my offer being rescinded due to GPA drop?

Hi everyone,

I am currently a senior in my last semester of college. When I applied for my position at EY-Parthenon as a generalist in fall 2021, I originally had a 3.68 GPA and got the job. Then I had some Covid complications and had a 3.3 for the fall 2021 semester and am on track to get a 3.3 this semester as well. Leaving me with a 3.58 gpa in total. In all of my courses, nothing was less than a B- across my entire transcript, however; I'm worried they will see a .1 drop-off in my gpa and rescind my offer. 

Plus, the contract specifically stated, "our offer is subject to the terms and conditions set forth in the application you completed for employment at EY and upon your: (1) continued maintenance of a strong academic record, including, without limitation, in course work that EY deems relevant to the position for which you are receiving an offer; and (2) timely completion of the degree(s) you are pursuing at the time you receive this offer. EY may withdraw your offer of employment if it determines in its discretion that these conditions have not been met. As such, you will be expected to send an unofficial copy of your final transcript prior to your start date. Additionally, an unofficial transcript following a semester/quarter and an official, degree confirming transcript following graduation may be requested."

 Am I just being paranoid or is this something to worry about/fix? Should I reach out to the recruiter?

Hi there,

First of all, congratulations on your offer.

This is absolutely nothing to worry about for you - this is just some fine-print that is included in a contract to leave a legal back-door for a company in case of extreme scenarios. Don’t let it make you nervous. The reality is, a 0.1 drop is barely a rounding error that won’t even be noticed by anyone. Period. Don’t reach out to anyone.

Will also add that in my almost 10 years in consulting and heavy involvement in recruiting, I have never even heard of any such clause materializing - not in any firm. Really nothing to worry about.

Hi there and most importantly congrats for the offer.

After 6+ years recruiting experience from the inside, I have never seen relevant discussions around GPA, especially in the level you are describing. Firms usually have their “Universities of preference” and being part of one will make you get the opportunity to participate in the recruiting process. Once you do participate in the process, they don’t tend to look back at GPAs or even resume. I am not saying it is not relevant, but since you got the offer already, you crossed that barrier. Having said that, I would not reach to the recruiter with such inquiry - you don’t want to voluntarily raise flags that do not exist and are not worth being raised.

Dont take everything so seriously. The toughest part was done, which was to get the offer. Make sure you graduate on time and enjoy your days prior to starting the work, and don’t allow these thoughts to take so much of your peace.

Hi there,

You don’t have to worry about this and don’t need to reach out. They probably won’t even notice the difference. Plus, if they notice, they have no reasons to consider a 0.1 drop as something worth rescinding an offer – it is not even a significant drop.

Think from their point of view. If they rescind an offer, they would:

  • Lose a great candidate they invested time and money on
  • Possibly create bad publicity for the company

No rational company would think to do so for a 0.1 difference that happened after the offer was extended.

You dropped from a great GPA to a completely fine GPA. You got Bs. You are completely fine :)

Stop stressing!

Those conditions are about you actually graduating and getting your degree. As in, if you FAILED classes you'd be in trouble!

Trust me, you can sleep easy, your offer is safe! Please do not reach out to the recruiter :)
