Online or in person interviews

How are firms are conducting interviews? Especially if you are an international applicant.

I understand they might prefer online, would they expect you to attend in person or fly you out for R2 for example (not applying for senior role)? Are they conducting all or most interviews fully remote now?

Would be good to know variation of this in different regions too.

hey there!

Currently it varies between firms escpecially since Covid:

For MBB (McKinsey, BCG, Bain):

  • 1st round: Almost always online, especially for international candidates.
  • 2nd round: Depends on region.
    • North America & Western Europe: Often in person, especially if you’re local. International candidates may stay remote.
    • Asia/Middle East: More likely to request in-person if you're in-region.
    • CEE, Africa, LATAM: Increasing return to in-person, but flexible for international applicants.

For Big 4 (Deloitte, EY, KPMG, PwC)

  • Mostly online for both rounds, especially in large global offices.
  • Some local offices may do final rounds in person if you're already nearby.

 Will they fly you out?

  • Not common for junior roles. If they want you in person and you’re international, they may delay the interview until you’re in-country or accommodate online.

In general I would say

  • Unless you’re applying to a local office or already in the region, expect online interviews.
  • If invited in person, you can often politely request to do it remotely — especially if it’s a junior role.

Hello there,
I don't think there is a rule, and even if there is, it can change quite quickly.
A lot of interviews are now online, but I have seen cases where the candidate was given the choice, and others where it was mandatory in person.
Regarding flying you out, it can happen (Accenture flew me out for a junior role), but I would say it's not common practice.
Hope this helps !

Hi there!

These days, it's almost always online.

Sometimes, the final round is in person, and typically only if the candidates happens to be in that region, or if this is the specific preference of that firm / office.

It's worth checking with the recruiter, but I would rather assume that it's likely going to be online.

Best,
Cristian

Hi there,

Nowadays, at least in Asia, the default is online.

Flying someone out for an interview is really expensive, so unless it is for a really senior role, that's quite unlikely.

If you happen to be in the same country, you can ask whether you can do it in-person, but that's like an exception rather than norm.

Best,

Emily

Hello there,

There isn’t a rule, however if you’re not based in the same country of the office you’re applying to, it is more likely that at least the first round will be online.
Best,

Mari
