Negative Review Career Advice

I've been working in consulting at a boutique firm for just over a year and was recently given a negative performance review, which completely caught me off guard. The feedback I’d received on past projects hadn’t raised major concerns, and during this most recent performance review cycle, I was only staffed on one project (just a month’s worth of work over a six-month period as business was slow)

They gave me two options: go on a PIP or leave. I ultimately chose to leave, as the PIP didn’t come with clear success criteria or a structure that felt like it would set me up to improve meaningfully. The whole situation was unexpected and felt like the rug was pulled out from under me.

While I know I’m not a perfect consultant, I do genuinely enjoy the work and the nature of the projects. I'm now at a crossroads: do I try to restart at another consulting firm, or take this as a sign to explore a completely different?

Has anyone been through something similar and come out on the other side? I’d really appreciate hearing any experiences or insights?

Hi,

Sorry to hear about situation.

Having spent several years in consulting, I can safely say that while consulting is arguably one of the more objective industries in terms of performance management, being asked to leave is not always an indicator of how good you actually are as a consultant (and the flip side is sometimes true as well).

There are many factors that are at play during your time in consulting that you may not have control of, and luck plays a factor as well. Sometimes people get dealt the short end of the stick. From what you described, it sounds like some external factors did not go in your favor.

But I think from what you are writing, the answer is clear. You like the job and the nature of the projects. Why not give it another try? What's the harm in that? Maybe you fail again, but maybe you do really well.

If there are no circumstances holding you back - i.e. you are going to start a family and this is a crossroads decision; going back to consulting might risk your relationship with your significant other - then I would try again.

All the best!
