Moving from Product Management to Business Strategy - what is the best route?

Do I need to have a Consulting background to get into BizOps roles in Tech? I am currently a Product Manager at Lyft. I have been a PM at Lyft for 3 years post MBA.

Is it worth recruiting into tier 2 Consulting firms such as Deloitte, EY, PwC and other smaller ones (experienced hire route) to get some consulting experience? Will that help me go back into the Tech industry in 2 years and pivot into BizOps roles?

Not at all.

In fact, strategy consulting can sometimes even be a ding against you for BizOps! (Too much "thinking", not enough "doing")

If you're a product manager at Lyft, and show good progression/responsibilities, that's far more relatable experience to BizOps in Tech.

Hi,

Having worked in BizOps/Strategy in tech companies I can tell you that a transition from PM to BizOps is very doable. Given your background it is unlikely you need to work in consulting first especially if you are making the transition in the same company.

However....there is the very real issue that BizOps teams expect you to hit the ground running and have a consulting toolkit built up. This can be learned on the job but takes time to get right. The second thing that tends to happen is that internal strategy teams really prize MBB experience and might be skeptical of your abilities to deliver at least initially.

All the best,

Udayan

Dear A,

The quick answer is yes. Some consulting experience will definitely help you to proceed in your career, however it's just one of the options.

You can also transfer from the product management to the strategy role within the tech and move inside the company, or to change an emploer in order to gain the similar experience. So strategy consulting is just one of the possible alternatives, however highly recommendable.

If you need further specific advice, just drop me a line.

Best,
André

Hi there,

In young tech firm there are quite a lot of mobility in switching roles. If you are thinking about doing a BizOps role in the Tech firm, no you don't need to have consulting experience to do it.

Instead, 2 things would be more practical: (1) get involved in some projects that can give you opportunity to learn more about business and build your business acumen; (2) network with the biz team to show your keen interest and that you are up to the challenge.

Best,

Emily
