McKinsey - Reapplication

First of all, I am sorry to hear about the rejection from McKinsey!

• First of all, I would advise you to just tell them you want to reapply and ask how long you should wait. Although the waiting period is usually 12-18 months, exceptions are sometimes made depending on the candidate's performance. This also means that you should continue working on your profile during that time, even if McKinsey has invited you. I would also strongly advise you to consider working with an experienced coach like me for the McKinsey Solve pre-interview assessment next time.
• Moreover, if you haven't already, I would strongly advise you to apply to other consulting firms as well, so you'll maximize your chances of receiving at least one offer by the end of the application processes.

Are you set on the specific role you applied for? If you aren't, then perhaps you might wanna first look at other roles you might be a fit for. In some instances, I have found candidates which applied for roles which they did not meet the requirements for. So applying to the right role is key.

There's absolutely nothing wrong with asking when you can re-apply. A simple email thanking them for an opportunity with a question of when you'd be eligible to re-apply would suffice. You can even ask if it is possible to apply to another region in the mean time (because sometimes rejections are not because of Solve assessment score, but because of CV screening and sometimes recruiting limits), So based on what the reason was in your case, you might be able to try another office..

you can expect the ban period to be 12-18 months, depending on region and role. It doesn't hurt to confirm the exact timing with your recruiting contact. When you do re-apply, the firm will want to see additional relevant experiences on your CV versus your first application. So make sure you keep that in mind for the meantime.

Sorry to hear. 

Typically, the wait time is 1y, but it's not set in stone. Some recruiters do make exceptions, as long as you proactively ask for it and you explain what sort of progress you've made in the meantime to make it worth interviewing you again. 

Still, I would put lots of effort in the meantime in other applications as well. Just so you don't depend on whether McKinsey is willing to accept this exception or not.

Totally fine to reach out! Just keep it short and professional—something like: "Hi [Recruiter’s Name], I hope you're doing well. I wanted to ask what the reapplication timeline looks like following my previous application in January. I'd really appreciate any guidance on when I’d be eligible to reapply and how best to strengthen my profile in the meantime."

Shows interest, maturity, and leaves the door open for advice!

So sorry it wasn’t this time that you’ve moved forward!

Ask directly about it and see if there is a chance for you to reapply in six months (cool off period is usually 12 months) . Some colleagues of mine have done this successfully.
