Mckinsey offices

Hello,

So I had 3 offices as my preferences but i received a totally different office ‘on behalf of’

I needed a sponsor for the other 3 offices but for the office they sent, its in my home country so no sponsor needed. But i really want the other offices. What should I do? call them understand how this happened or please recommend what to do!

Hi there,

First of all, congratulations on being invited by McKinsey!

This is indeed an interesting question which is probably relevant for quite a lot of users, so I am happy to provide my perspective on it:

  • Generally speaking, chances are high that you will still be interviewed in your home office without any effect on your future office.
  • As such, I would advise you to wait until you receive a direct recruiting contact, call him/ her and politely ask about your situation. I am sure McKinsey will do its best to allocate you to your desired offices.

In case you want a more detailed discussion on how to best prepare your upcoming interviews, please feel free to contact me directly.

I hope this helps,

Hagen

Hi there, I just mean as soon as you receive any direct recruiting contact (e.g. when they will invite you to the interviews). I suppose you can already do so.

They clearly prefer you apply in your home office. Unless you can provide a strong reason why you need to be in a different location (please notice I did not write “want” or “prefer” but used the word “need”), they won't change this.

In your country you know the language, the culture, the business context, and you don't need sponsorship. And you may be staffed globally anyway. So you prove your value first, and then ask for international projects, or ask for an office transfer.

Or you get an offer from a competitor (ideally for the office you want) and then negotiate again with Mck ;)

Hi there,

They've done this on purpose - I think it's highly unlikely they change your office (this isn't random).

If you truly want those other offices (and would reject an offer from your home office), then call up and try. Or, you can complete your interviews, wait for an offer, and then try to negotiate an office switch.

Ultimately, I think the most likely outcome is you'll need to work in your home office for a few years before ultimately working your way towards an office transfer.

Hi!

I believe the best way to move forward is to discuss this directly with HR once they'll contact you for the next steps.

Good luck,

It doesn't seem like a mistake - seems deliberate.

However, no harm in talking to HR/recruiter and sorting things out.
