Hi there,

The PEI should generally be around 5 minutes. You should also expect to answer follow-up deep-dive questions that could take you to a total time of 10-15 minutes for a given story.

Here's another Q&A for more context: https://www.preplounge.com/en/consulting-forum/mckinsey-pei-duration-of-how-long-i-speak-7832

Hey there,

You should be able to talk for a couple of minutes about your story without being interrupted. Usually, the interviewers will use that story and start asking more drilling questions.

Have a look at this in-depth article I wrote that should answer all your questions: https://www.preplounge.com/en/mckinsey-pei

Cheers,

2-3 mins is a good reference point but it can be shorter or slightly longer depending on the question and how detailed your example is. Interviewers tend to get lost in longish answers, so you need to balance that.

Record yourself while you practice these answers and watch the length of your answer, tone of voice etc.

It should be around ~3 minutes to tell the highlights of the story, but be prepared to have a 10 minute discussion on each story, so make sure you have a lot of relevant content. Moreover as you don't know exactly what questions they will ask, you have to be prepared to deep dive on several diferent areas of your story.

You need to be extremely detailed in your McKinsey PEI and touch on all of the key points needed for a good story. I usually guide people to have 5-7 mins at the least for each story

Hi there,

This is indeed an interesting question which is probably relevant for quite a lot of users, so I am happy to provide my perspective on it:

  • First of all, I would advise you to be aware of the fact that you initially pitch your situation to the interviewer in 2-3 sentences. Based on this, the interviewer will decide whether the situation might fit the dimension or not. Only after this, you will lay out the situation in detail.
  • Generally speaking, I would advise you to prepare and talk about the situation in as much detail as possible which might easily reach 8-10 minutes. Obviously, you could also prepare talking about the situation more briefly yet this will solely result in the interviewer asking more questions and in you having less possibility to steer the situation. Again, please remember that the PEI (i.e. personal fit) part of the interviews will last about 15-20 minutes in total.

In case you want a more detailed discussion on how to best prepare the McKinsey PEI (i.e. personal fit) part of the interviews, please feel free to contact me directly.

I hope this helps,

Hagen
