Wondering what happens after you pass the background check? Would you be notified by email by the third party company or should I reach out to McKinsey HR to follow up after 2-4 weeks ?

Hi there,
The check is run by a third party on behalf of McK, and the results go back to the recruiting team rather than to you. In most cases they will only contact you directly if something needs clarifying, so no news from them is usually the normal path.
Your recruiter is the one who closes the loop. Waiting a couple of weeks to hear back from them and then sending a short note asking where things stand is entirely reasonable and will not be read as impatience.

Hello there !
The background check starts before your employment begins, however it does not have to finish before your contract starts (mine and that of a couple of colleagues was only finished ~2 months after we joined).
So I would not think of the 2 timelines behind linked, nor expect a significant update from the background check.
