MBB Office Location Change

Hello,

I have been extended an offer to join MBB in one particular office. The managing partner of the office tried to get in touch directly after, but we weren't able to talk given his schedule.

Later, I spoke to HR about the possibility of joining another office in the same region instead. After expressing my personal reasons regarding my preference for the other office, I was told they'd have to check and get back to me. I was then told that the managing partner of the office I was extended an offer to join would like to schedule a call. He briefly mentioned that he knows about my request to change offices and throughout the call, it felt like he was trying to win me over and have me change my mind.

My question is: is HR indirectly letting me know that moving to a different office isn't something they'll be approving/offering? What should be my next move if I am still keen on making the change, i.e. reach out to HR directly and ask for updates etc?

I don’t think so. They have no reasons to let you know “indirectly”. They will either tell you that it is possible or cannot do so

Given you already communicated your preference to HR and they said they would get back to you, I would wait for their reply. If you don’t hear from them after 1-2 weeks, you can follow up for an update.

Would you mind sharing which MBB you're talking about (perhaps even region/cities)?

If the offices are in fact in the same region, e.g. DACH, and you wish to switch from Munich to Dusseldorf, this should not be an issue at all. You might just have to travel more but that's your burden to bare.

Sure, someone might want you in a specific location, but they shouldn't be able to tell you. But again, some more details would be good.

Dear candidate,

if you have already expressed your preference then they know and likely will get back to you soon. At this point I think you can just wait, as long as that is ok for you personally. They will eventually tell you directly what is possible and what is not. It rather sounds to me that they are accomodating in the sense that they are considering your request. Let's be hopeful

They're not “indirectly” letting you know anything in my opinion. They're just trying to keep you in that office.

Ultimately, there's nothing you can do at this point but play the waiting game.

I would encourage you to temper your expectations - they don't normally appreciate office change requests after offers have been given.
