MBB Interview

Hi all,

I have been invited to the final round! I was told by HR that I will only have 1 interview with a partner. Thought that the final round consists of 2 interviews with 2 partners for MBB. I've checked online and it seems that people usually have 2 interviews for the final round for the office that I have applied to and the offices in neighbouring countries but it's only 1 for me. Any idea why's that? Thanks!

- The role I applied to is a consulting role, generalist track

Why worry, this is good! Dont speculate. Its a little off the standard process, but it doesn't matter.

Give your best and let things happen. All the best.

McKinsey & Company | Currently offering 1 free coaching session| Happy to PARTNER with you to get an offer from MBB

Hello,

thanks a lot for the question. :)

First of all big congratulations for this brilliant achievement!

The specific number and organisation of interviews in MBB is pretty standard: first round (2-3 interviews), final round (2 interviews). However it can change based on the following factors

  • performance during the recruiting process (e.g., first round)
  • profile of the candidate (e.g., experienced or not)
  • specific position you are applying for (e.g., generalist or specific)
  • availability of partners
  • urgency to fill the position

Generally speaking, the following 2 scenarios can happen apart from the traditional one:

  • 1 interview more or less compared to the traditional process
  • same number of interviews split in more than 2 rounds

I can give you the following 2 advices

  • Check → Ask to HR if this interview will be really the final one or if there will be another round. This will allow you to better clarify your ideas
  • Focus → Keep your concentration and energy on the interview itself; do not overthink about potential explanations of the specific number of interviews. Approach it step by step

To conclude, based on my experience,  availability of partners is a key variable. However, focus really only on your performance. Nothing else!

Do not hesitate to reach out me in case of further questions! I am currently offering a free coaching session.

Good luck!

Matteo

Congrats! Well done :)

This is exactly why I advise people to try not to “expect” anything from their interviews.

Yes, 2 is the standard, but for whatever reason they're only doing one. This happens and it's not out of the ordinary. Nothing to read into!

Hi there,

first of all, congrats to making it to final round!

In general, you are right, there are typically 2 or 3 interviews in the final round across all MBB firms and geographies. However, it's not the first time I see an MBB deviating from standard process and this can have many reasons…

  • Standard procedure for a certain practice
  • Very high confidence in a candidate (not common at all, but have seen it before)
  • Interviewer availability
  • Other logistical constraints
  • Etc

From the outside, we can really just speculate. .

Whatever it is though, it actually doesn't matter - You made it to final round, now focus on what's in your control, which is to perform consistently well in whatever number of interviews they throw at you. Not more, not less.

If only one interview, even better - one less person to convince. Capture the opportunity!

Wish you all the best!

Regards, Andi

Hi there,

Congrats! You're almost there!

This really depends from office to office, not really candidate by candidate. It's likely that the office x role x practice that you are applying for only does one interview in the final round. Best of luck!

Hi there,

It's unusual but not unheard of. If anything, this is good news!

It's certainly 100% a non-issue (not sure if you thought it was?).

Best of luck!

Hello!

Congrats for making it to the final round!

I agree, it´s indeed quite unique. Do you join to a specific practice or as an expert?

Probably you already have most of the checks, and they just want a final opinion.

Hope it helps!

Cheers,

Clara

It's hard to say without specificity of firm or office.  For example at McKinsey, many offices have three final round interviews.  Some offices even have a third final round with one partner.  There are also offices where you don't interview with any partners.  It really varies and so I would just go with the flow :)

Good luck!

There could be many reasons for it, including availability of partner or first round performance. The important thing is to not worry about it at all. If they did not think you were a good candidate they would not bother calling you for the final round.
