MBB

Does MBB use microsoft product (Excel, power point, etc) only ? Or do they also use google product (google slides, google sheets, etc) ?

The reason why I am asking is that some features are different on excel and google sheet. Just want to make sure I get used once starting the job. Thanks so much

Hello,

MBB generally uses Microsoft products, but it will depend on the project and the client. You might also be using products like Tableau and Alteryx for visual outputs. In my experience at McKinsey I never once used Google products, but it isn't out of the question. If you're asking for preparation purposes, I would focus on the Microsoft suite.

Most consults use MS Office. The exact version varies - though it is converging to Office 365. Each consult has its own “special shortcuts” toolbar built-in to PowerPoint which also has provision for dedicated client templates. For graphs, most consults use ThinkCell. And in general for laptops - most commonly you'll find ThinkPads (preferably X1s)

Every consulting firm (including MBB) I know of uses Microsoft. Have not come across any that uses Google

Pretty much exclusively MS Office. You won't be using Google products.

Hi there,

First of all, congratulations on the (potential) offer!

This is indeed an interesting question which is probably relevant for quite a lot of users, so I'm happy to give you my perspective on it:

  • All consulting companies I know of use the Microsoft OfficeSuite. Still, it is great that you are proficient with the respective Google products as they are very much transferable.
  • While it is great of you that you want to get used to the dominating office software before you career entry, I would advise you not to focus too much on it for the two reasons:
    • Most consulting companies provide extensive introductory trainings to all new employees to get acquainted to the toolkit used.
    • The best practice still is learning on-the-job which you will have plenty of opportunity to.

In case you want a more detailed discussion on what truly is helpful to prepare befor your upcoming career entry, please feel free to contact me directly.

I hope this helps,

Hagen
