I just got offered an internship at Bain, yesterday even though I'm a nontraditional engineering student. I'll graduate with my master's in 2024 after completing this internship and plan to join full-time afterward. Recently, I learned about deferred MBA programs. A consultant from MBB suggested that because of my unique academic background, I have a good chance, even if I apply before finishing my Bain internship. Should I start applying to top MBA schools now since I have a year left until my internship starts, or should I wait until I'm working? I'm new to the business world, so are there any important things to keep in mind when applying for a deferred MBA program?

Hi there!
These sort of opportunities are indeed great.
How they work actually differs from geography to geography.
My recommendation would be to reach out to one of the consultants in the office you'll be joining (ideally at a similar seniority as the one that you're going for) and ask them how things work in that particular office.
My expectation is that you don't need to apply for MBA programs already. Usually you need to spend close to two years in an MBB before you go for an MBA program.
Best,
Cristian

Hi there,
depends a bit on the school and your exact profile. But generally speaking, if you qualify for a role with Bain, chances are quite high that your profile is suitable for Top 10 MBA schools - this assumes your have at least a couple of years work experience, as that's what most MBA schools will require.
That being said, if you want to keep your options open, can be a good idea to apply in parallel (can already indicate your upcoming Bain on your resume to further strenghten it).
Feel free to reach out via DM and share your CV then I can give more tailored advice.
Hope this helps.

Hello,
Congratulations on getting a Bain internship, that’s terrific! Deferred MBA programs can be a great option for students who have figured out that they want to do an MBA early on, and feel like they have a good background to apply. It sets you up for your first few years of work + business school all in one go. However, the downside is that some people aren’t quite ready to apply to business school directly from undergrad/masters, and you may later reevaluate your decision to do an MBA once you start working.
However, if you don’t get into a deferred MBA program, you can still apply for MBA further down the line. So there’s not too much downside to applying at this stage.

I don't see a problem.
You know you can always change your mind and apply somewhere else, right? (may have a cost, though)
And that if you fail, you can apply again later.
So honestly I don't see much of a negative… just a way to increase your chances of getting into the top mba program of your choice.

Hi there,
Q: Should I start applying to top MBA schools now since I have a year left until my internship starts, or should I wait until I'm working?
If there is no penalty for withdrawing or other downsides and you eventually plan to pursue an MBA, you can apply now. As mentioned by Andi, you can add the Bain name on your CV to strengthen the application.
You might want to check if this creates any conflicts with a possible sponsorship of the MBA from Bain though.
Best,
Francesco
