Masters degree to career change into consulting

Hey guys little background about me: Psych major going into senior year of undergrad, was pre-med but decided I don’t want to continue

3.9+ GPA, 334 GRE (164V,170Q) (=770GMAT), no consulting related internships

Are there any masters programs (besides MBA) that place a lot of people into good consulting roles? Just trying to figure out what to do with my life so any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Hi there,

Masters in management can. And, there are plenty of MBB programs for PhD candidates.

That said, if you're trying to get into consulting, why don't you just do that now?

If it doesn't work now, get some years of work experience and then try to pivot (by re-recruiting again, and then trying an MBA if that doesn't work).

It doesn't really make sense to go do a masters now for the sole purpose of trying to get into consulting.

How can you get into consulting if you've tried and failed? Well, I'd ask you the following questions:

1) Did you go out and get consulting-related experience for your resume (i.e. pro-bono projects, school clubs, etc.)?

2) Did you get your resume professionally reviewed?

3) Did you network extensively before applying to the consulting firms?

4) Did you apply to more than just a few firms? (I'm talking 20-40 companies/applications)

If you answered “no” to any of the above 4 then you didn't do it “right”! Try again!

Numbers look good on your profile.

Question is- do you want to do a Masters just to get into Consulting or because you genuinely need it to upskills, build network etc etc? With the latter you will enjoy it more, give it your best and let things happen. So, choose a programme which will help fill the gaps you currently have keeping in mind their consulting placements. MiM is good!

You have a fantastic profile! I echo Ian’s advice - if you want to do consulting then do it now!

Hello,

Finance masters and management masters (e.g., healthcare management) programs tend to place a lot of people into consulting. However, I second the advice that you could consider going into consulting straight out of undergrad too!
