Married at McKinsey

Hi,

Me and my spouse just graduated and are both due to join McKinsey's Middle East Office soon as Fellows. I wanted to ask if there are any issues due to being married at MBB's, or anything we might need to take care of specifically while working together? Moreover, are there any repercussions we might face while working together at the same MBB firm.

Hello,

Congratulations on the offers! It's no issue at all - be sure to disclose your relationship to HR, and follow confidentiality practices as needed. The only practical implications this would have for you is extra consideration if there is a possibility of being staffed on a project together (e.g., if one of you is more senior and would be in a position of hierarchy, there might be a conversation with both of you about how to handle that), and additional distance in discussions of each others' promotions, as Pedro points out.

Hi there,

That's fantastic - well done to both of you!

No issues here, but HR does need to be made aware. Generally, within a specific company office it's perfectly fine to talk about low stakes projects (so this is easier than having a partner in another MBB). That said, you both will always need to be super clear on security/sensitivity levels of each project and be careful to what extent you discuss work.

Perhaps try to avoid the same projects (though staffing will probably ensure this regardless) but other than that there shouldn't be any issues!

Hi there,

Congratulations on the offers! In terms of your question:

1) There are any issues due to being married at MBB's, or anything we might need to take care of specifically while working together?

No issues, just be sure to:

  1. Disclose this to HR
  2. Follow the usual confidentiality practice when needed (the main clauses should be mentioned in your contract as well)

2) Moreover, are there any repercussions we might face while working together at the same MBB firm.

Not really. The only possible issue I can think about, as mentioned by Stanislav, is if you end with some kind of conflict of interest, for example if one person is managing the other.

Best,

Francesco

There's no problem. But you are not going to be staffed on the same projects (and probably not be staffed to the same industries, to avoid you working simultaneously for competing companies). And one may not be able to be present (asked to leave the room) when deciding on the spouse's promotion, if at any point you are different ranks.

Hey, congratulations to not just one but both of you on acing your McKinsey interviews – doubly awesome :)!

Here are some reflections from an ex-McK consultant who has met his wife while she was also working there!

Couple of things:

1. You need to disclose this to the Firm HR by policy

2. You should avoid, and the Firm will expect you to avoid, situations in which you might have a conflict of interest. For example, where one of the you has influence on promotion of the other: e.g., a manager and a managee. Little chance of that though if you are starting together, at least for now.

3. You will need to figure out a way to have time for yourselves with a fairly busy schedule for both of you!

Other than that, I wouldn't worry too much and just enjoy the ride!

Good luck to you both :)
